Grumbling Philip to control Queen's message
By Nicholas Hellen
September 29, 2003

THE Duke of Edinburgh has been asked to take overall control of the Queen's Christmas message after years of grumbling about the quality of the television broadcasts.

He is being lined up to supervise the production, direction and final editing of the show under the plans devised by senior palace officials. Broadcasting insiders were told earlier this northern summer about Prince Philip's proposed new role.

It emerged at the weekend that he has previously had a close involvement in the script but had felt let down by the finished program. "At the debriefing meetings each January he always finds something wrong with the BBC and ITN's efforts," one palace insider said.

"The Queen's approach is more inclusive, personal and endearing,' said a source. "The Duke believes the nation should listen to a stern Christian lecture. He isn't very interested in addressing the beliefs of Hindus, Muslims or Jews."

Courtiers are apprehensive that Philip's new role may backfire. "He doesn't care about the ratings element at all," said a source. The British audience for the address, which is also transmitted in the Commonwealth, has dwindled to a third of the 28million peak it reached in 1987.

Some years ago Philip objected to the inclusion of film clips from the Queen's overseas tours, intended to provide a dramatic backdrop. He reckoned that "travelogues" would arouse envy among viewers stuck in Britain for the winter.

With Philip in overall charge, he would be expected to be able to call on the co-operation of the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Wessex and other members of the royal family.

Private polling conducted by the palace shows that the public also expect Prince William and Prince Harry to start making walk-on appearances.

The princes have previously rejected such offers by the broadcasters.

One senior broadcaster warned the precedents were ominous. He said: "The last time the royal family took direct control of a broadcast they ended up with It's a Royal Knockout.

EUROSTAR GIVES QUEEN A MARILYN MONROE MAKEOVER

2 OCTOBER 2003
A Belgian advertising agency has taken a cheeky swipe at the Royal Family, by featuring a Queen lookalike in a Marilyn Monroe pose. The new ads, promoting Eurostar rail links between London and Belgium, recreate the classic image from the movie The Seven Year Itch, in which Marilyn Monroe's skirt billows up as she walks over an air vent.

The picture, in which Her Majesty is shown wearing a pink dress and tights, has ruffled feathers in some traditionalist circles. But Eurostar insists that no offence is intended by the irreverent campaign.

"We're delighted with the new Belgian ad, it shows Eurostar's new edgier, cheekier personality," said company director Paul Charles. The ads have also boosted ticket sales, he said, which is good news for the British economy. "The surge in sales is due to the great affection the Belgians have for our Royal Family, which is great for the British tourist industry."

Buckingham Palace is remaining mute on the royal reaction to the advertisement, however. "We will leave it to the general public and others to judge its taste," said a spokesman.

about 1958. Visit to Canada. In this instance, it looks like she visited Ocean Falls, BC.

I was in error with the year. According to the Queen's webpage, the Royal Visit was from June 18 to August 1 of 1959. I wonder where I might get the daily itinerary of that visit?
Princess Margaret did a tour of BC in 1958.

Sorry for the poor quality of the scan, but I found this photocopied picture from a book I found years ago. I wish I could remember the name of the book, there were many great pictures of Europe's royal families in it.

In this picture, a picture of an elegant Queen Elizabeth II.

Thanks Iasu.

I remember as a youngster there was a 'big flap' about a royal visitor to Surrey, BC along 120-th Street (Scott Road). I think it was the Royal Couple. According to the foregoing chronology, it doesn't look like the Earl of Snowdown accompanied his wife?

Queen Pays Tribute to British Pioneers

14 OCTOBER 2003
The Queen has hosted a special reception at Buckingham Palace to honour pioneering figures in British society.

Enduring pop star Cliff Richard and pink-haired designer Zandra Rhodes were among the guests, as Her Majesty paid tribute to inventors and thinkers who have contributed to their community.

Over 400 guests from all walks of life attended the bash, which included a rare exhibition of the royal archives. The items on show included two stones thrown through the windows of the Palace by protesting suffragettes in 1914. Each of the rocks bears a message reading: "Constitutional methods being ignored drive us to window smashing."

There were also records of Queen Victoria's reaction to her first experience with a telephone. "Most extraordinary," exclaimed the monarch after testing Alexander Graham Bell's invention, though she also commented: "It is rather faint and one must hold the tube close to one's ear."

At the gathering the Queen and Prince Philip also mingled with 10 Nobel prize winners, the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner and the man who produced the Beatles.

I think Her Majesty the Queen been looking history of her beloved war since she was young til she marry to Prince Philip.

I think Her Majesty will happy to remind to see the collegues elder woman still alives to remind about war history!

Queen: We stand together in fight against terror

The Queen has told George Bush Britain and America stood firm in their determination to defeat terrorism.

Speaking at a Buckingham Palace state banquet in honour of the US President, she said the two countries had never been closer.

"We share the confidence - and the courage - to try to make this a more prosperous, a safer and, above all, a freer world," the Queen told VIP guests, including Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The term "special relationship" admirably described the friendship between the United Kingdom and the United States, she said.

"In this 21st century we face together many unforeseen and formidable challenges," the Queen said.

She told Mr Bush: "The leadership you showed in the aftermath of the terrible events of September 11, 2001 won the admiration of everyone in the United Kingdom.

"You led the response to an unprovoked terrorist attack which was on a scale never seen before.

"Your friends in this country were amongst the very first to sense the grief and horror that struck your nation that day - and to share the slow and often painful process of recovery.

"And our troops have served side by side in Afghanistan and Iraq to lead the fight to restore freedom and democracy.

"Our two countries stand firm in their determination to defeat terrorism."
