There's more to come of this since the announcement was made. I'm glad William was the first senior royal at her side today. The changes are falling into place as we speak.

Prince William steps up as he joins the Queen for lunch with*Aung San Suu Kyi
Quote:
he Duke of Cambridge has stepped up to assist his grandmother the Queen, as they host Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi at Buckingham Palace as the Duke of Edinburgh eases his way into retirement.

The Duke, who yesterday announced he would be retiring from public duties from August this year, was absent from lunch at the palace, with his grandson joining the Queen for lunch.

Ms Suu Kyi , State Counsellor and the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of Burma, visited the Royal at Buckingham Palace today, and also joined the Prince of Wales for a separate meeting at Clarence House.

The Queen also conducted a series of investitures this morning, reflecting yesterday's announcement that she will "continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements with the support of members of the Royal Family".
Prince William is the Queen's plus one as Philip retires | Daily Mail Online
Quote:
The Queen has made her first outing without her husband since Prince Philip announced his retirement on Thursday.

Instead, Queen Elizabeth was joined by her grandson, Prince William, on Friday as she welcomed Burma's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi ahead of a private lunch at Clarence House in London.

The outing comes after it was announced that 95-year-old Prince Philip will retire this Autumn, and that 'Team Windsor' will step up to take on his duties as he prepares to end 70 years of royal engagements.

Younger members of the Royal family, including Prince William and Prince Harry, will now 'rally around' and support the Queen with future events, after the Duke of Edinburgh revealed his decision to retire.

The Queen has held a meeting with Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi at Buckingham Palace. Ms Suu Kyi, Burma's de facto leader who is in Europe for a series of meetings, will later sit down for talks with Charles at Clarence House, the third time the pair have met.

This is the British Royal Family doing what they do the best. They do things smoothly, calmly and very well planned in advance. This six month period of the transition of Philip stepping down and William, Kate and Harry stepping up to full time royal duties are already in full swing.

I can bet my last pain reliever (I have a headache today) that the plan for William to be the Queen's "plus one" today wasn't decided overnight.

Yes.. that's the thing I love a lot in BRF.. Things move on so smoothly so seamlessly.. Such a significant change was executed so subtly..

As Philip isn't retiring until September any times a royal accompanies the Queen between now and then aren't related to this announcement.

Andrew accompanied the Queen to an engagement recently.

There have been a number of times that someone other than The Queen has been accompanied by someone other than Philip in the past.

Right, but it's all done in the efforts to help her. That's what the family will be doing even more going into the fall and beyond.

PRINCE William steps into Prince Philip’s shoes yesterday — but looks awkward alongside the Queen at a royal do.
1. The William hating Sun (who accused the Duke of insulting the Queen's legacy in March) is starting to irritate me more and more.

2. I loved seing William with the Queen on Friday.

3. He handled it so well and stayed in the background. And look at the way he smiles when Aung San Suu Kyi talks to the Queen - see from 0:20 in this video: https://twitter.com/TheRoyalFootman/...13774763225089

4. There is nothing awkward with William in this video at all.

I agree. William looked quite the proper gentleman escorting not only his grandmother, but his monarch. He's not supposed to be the chatty, "how ya'all doing and just call me Will" at this kind of a function.

Tabloids do this all the time. Pic out one frame of a video and make a story around it.

The BBC has the entire video and it's fine. Routine greeting

I agree because in this case he's not the highest ranking royal at this meeting. He's following the protocol that he's been instructed in for most of his life.

Yes, tabloids do this all the time. But had the Sun done it to Harry if had been the one with the Queen? Of course not. The William bashing in the British press is starting to be worse than their famous hatred of Charles.

That's the video I posted and (as I've said) nothing awkward there.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are hosting a party on Saturday for children who've lost a parent in the armed forces.

The event at Buckingham Palace is a way, the palace says, to honour those whose mother or father have died fighting for their country.

Jamie Molyneux is going with his younger brothers and sister. Their dad Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux was killed in 2011.

He says it's "comforting" to know they haven't been forgotten.

"The Duke of Cambridge wrote to us soon after my dad was killed," Jamie tells Newsbeat.

"It was very touching. He said he understood what we were going through as siblings, with his experience losing his mum Princess Diana."

ABsolutley splendid event. A huge amount of fun with the underlying function of building networks for these families with other families and organizations. Perfect event!

This is a prime example of families getting reinforcement and recognition of the ultimate sacrifice their family has made to crown and country. It beats having two officers at the door to inform them of their loss and then they're left to pick up the pieces.

This is what is important and got the ball rolling for Harry and his work with returning service personnel. It is important that they not ever be forgotten or thanked for their service. Their families need to know that their country is behind them in recognizing the loss they have endured.

With the Party at the Palace, they all came together to share a mutual loss and to celebrate the lives of their loved ones and talk about them. They are finding that they're not alone in their loss and they have the support of their country and the royals that serve their country. Nothing will ever heal the wound they suffered but they don't have to go it alone.

Harry was true to form and had a blast with the kids again I see. His interactions with them will be memories that they'll carry for the rest of their lives.
