Wonderful photographs of a moving occasion. I remember going around those war graves years ago. So many hundreds of thousands of deaths...

The Duchess of Cambridge told schoolchildren she was finding her visit to the Somme "emotional," as she toured a new museum dedicated to those lost in the bloody battle.

Kate said the experience had been "very moving" as she met British and French teenagers attending the centenary commemorations at Thiepval, France.

She was touring a new visitor centre at the Lutyens-designed Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme with the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry and French President Francois Hollande.

The Gloucesters and Adm. Tim Lawrence also attending. :flowers:

I'm so glad that Timothy got to speak at the end of the event.
That poem is so poignant!

Sidenote: you know how you imagine someone speaking?! And they sound nothing like it! That was Timothy for me.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore different brooches during the commemorations.

She wore the poppy & cornflower brooch with the 9th/12th Lancers brooch during the Thiepval Memorial service.

She wore the Pellatt brooch of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada regiment with something else at the the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial (mislabeled by the DM as the Ulster Memorial service.)

Can anyone identify what she is wearing in addition to the Pellatt brooch? It does not appear to be the poppy & cornflower brooch.

At the Ulster Memorial service she wore only the 9th/12th Lancers brooch without the poppy & cornflower brooch.

Thanks

Your comment has made me curious. :flowers: At what time marker in the video does Tim speak?

Great to see Tim there and to hear him speak :flowers: It is a rare event I have seen him without Anne, as he is usually there as support. But he is on the commission for commonwealth war graves (with the Duke of kent who is president).

Paris Match has some video of the ceremony and its aftermath that I hadn't seen anyone post, including (starting just after the 2 minute mark) some "behind the scenes" video of Hollande, Charles and Camilla and William, Kate, and Harry leaving after the ceremony.

I think the Duchess of Cambridge looked so perfect and lovely! Undescribable!

The Queen (in high spirits), acompainted by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal and the Earl of Wessex, hosted a Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse:

The weather may have been slightly overcast in Edinburgh this afternoon but the Queen certainly added a summary feel in her cheerful lemon ensemble.

The smiley monarch, 90, was joined by her husband the Duke of Edinburgh for the annual garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

During her engagement the royal, who turned 90 in April, was presented with a commemorative stone bench by Nicola Sturgeon.

There are days when I look forward to these ceremonies and there are days when I don't look forward to them. Nice to see the royals though.

Why not? This is one of the things which make Great Britain great and makes me proud to be half british.

And our beloved Queen (again in high spirits) looks great:

Sounds as if this was something new..?! They were appointed years ago, weren´t they?
Prince Philip were appointed in 1952, Prince Charles in 1977, Princess Anne in 2000 and Prince William in 2012.

Inside the Cathedral the processional route was changed ever so slightly and the procession used a ramp rather than the steps at the door (inside) so as The Queen wouldn't need to climb the 5-6 steps.
