From the Telegraph today:

Princess Anne goes hunting despite ban

Princess Anne has become the first Royal to be pictured fox-hunting since the ban on the sport was forced through Parliament.

She was pictured riding with the prestigious Beaufort Hunt, based near Tetbury in Gloucestershire - close to her home and the Prince of Wales's Highgrove residence.

Charles and his two sons, William and Harry, have frequently hunted with the Beaufort, but have been careful not to be photographed since the political furor.

Princess Anne reportedly arrived for the start of the meet at Chavenage House, and rode until lunchtime with the hunt.

She was joined by about 100 members of the Beaufort on horseback and another 50 on foot.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace today said he had no comment on the matter, saying only: "It is a private matter for her."

The Bill to ban hunting was forced through Parliament less than two weeks ago after a long-running battle between the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

The Speaker of the House of Commons was eventually forced to use the little-implemented Parliament Act to end the seven year stalemate.

The ban will come into effect on February 18 next year, although pro-hunting groups have already launched a legal challenge to its legitimacy.

PRINCESS Anne told a would-be kidnapper it was not "bloody likely" that she would get out of her car when the man pointed a gun at her in 1974, newly released secret papers revealed yesterday.

She also came close to losing her temper and hitting him but, showing suitable calm and presence of mind, realised that if she got into a fight, he would shoot her as he had her bodyguard.

The attacker, Ian Ball, had managed to grab the princess by the forearm and tried to wrestle her out of the car in the Mall in London. He pointed his gun at her and said: "I want you to come with me for a day or two because I want £2 million."

The princess, then only 23, refused to get out of the car, telling Ball sarcastically "Bloody likely" and adding: "I haven’t got £2 million."

The dramatic details of how the princess risked her life in the face of imminent danger to herself and her then husband, Captain Mark Phillips, whom she "protected" during the incident on 20 March 1974, were revealed when official documents were released under the 30-year rule by the National Archives.

Four men were wounded trying to protect the princess after Ball screeched his white Ford Escort to a halt in front of the Royal car carrying her, Captain Phillips and a lady-in-waiting, forcing it to stop.

When the princess’s personal police officer, Inspector James Beaton, got out to see what was wrong, Ball, by this time out of his car, shot him in the shoulder and wounded him. Insp Beaton fired at the man but missed. His gun then jammed, allowing Ball to move to the rear offside door and try to open it.

Insp Beaton moved to the nearside door, allowing the lady-in-waiting out, and threw himself in the back seat to shield the princess, who was struggling together with her husband to keep the door closed.

Ball fired again, into the car, shattering the window and hitting Insp Beaton in the right hand, before shooting him once more in the stomach.

When Insp Beaton collapsed at the gunman’s feet, Ball turned his attention to the driver, who was trying to get out of the car, shooting him in the chest.

The princess’s reaction is revealed in a secret briefing report for Harold Wilson, the former prime minister.

A clearly impressed Mr Wilson wrote in green ink at the top of the file: "A very good story. Pity the Palace can’t let it come out. Perhaps it will in court. HW."

He also sent a message to the princess that was fulsome in praise, telling her: "You yourself displayed great bravery and presence of mind in facing your assailant."

The only thing, according to the file marked 21 March, 1974, that stopped the princess from taking the attacker on was the thought he might shoot her.

In the paper, penned by Mr Wilson’s private secretary, Robert Armstrong, the princess said: "It was all so infuriating; I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car, and I was not going to get out of the car.

"I nearly lost my temper with him, but I knew that if I did, I should hit him and he would shoot me."

After repeatedly refusing Ball’s demands, the princess made a dive to get out of the car from the opposite side, forcing Ball into the path of security officers.

The gunman was eventually wrestled to the ground and overpowered when police reinforcements arrived, but not before he had shot and wounded another officer, Constable Michael Hills, and a fourth man.

In his pocket, he carried a ransom note addressed to the Queen, demanding £2 million, a free pardon and a plane to fly to Switzerland.

Insp Beaton was given a George Cross for bravery, while the other injured men were decorated for gallantry.

Bob Gibb, 72, a journalist who was at the scene immediately after the incident, told The Scotsman yesterday: "The gunman was lying on the ground, along with another man who appeared to have been injured.

"The doors to the Royal car were wide open and [the princess] was holding Mark Phillips, protecting him.

"I got the impression that she was in command of the situation. She is a very controlled lady - I wouldn’t like to mess with her at all."

Sir Chay Blyth, a neighbour and friend of the princess’s, said yesterday: "It’s the sort of behaviour I’d expect of her.

"She is an eventer, who has won a gold medal at the Olympics, a very gutsy lady. I wouldn’t like to be the guy who crossed her."

Ball, who later admitted attempted murder and attempted kidnap, was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and imprisoned under mental-health legislation. Officials believed he had no political motives.

The report concluded: "He had obviously worked out the details of his idea with care and attention to detail. But the whole framework was lunatic. This was the work of an isolated nutcase." It records that Ball had no record of violence.

From The Scotsman:

Princess Royal Joins Prestigious Hunt

The Princess Royal was pictured fox hunting Gloucester today just four weeks before the ban on hunting comes into effect.

She was riding with the prestigious Beaufort Hunt which is based in Tetbury, close to the Prince of Wales’ Highgrove home.

Charles and his sons William and Harry and their friend England polo star Luke Tomlinson have frequently hunted with the Beaufort Hunt.

Anne arrived just before 11am for the hunt which met near the village of Shipton Moyne near to the Highgrove estate.

She rode with the hunt for two-and-a-half hours before leaving in the early afternoon.

She was joined by around 60 members on horseback with the same number following behind in cars.

The Princess Royal became the first member of the Royal Family to be pictured fox-hunting since the ban on the sport was forced through Parliament in November last year.

The Bill was forced through after a long-running battle between the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

The ban will come into effect on February 18 but pro-hunting groups have warned that civil disobedience could follow if the Bill becomes law.

That outfit is around 30 years old. I have seen a picture of her wearing it in 1977.

I have read that Anne really doesn't care for fashion and is frugal.

I think Anne wore an outfit in her closest. ;)

I think she's worn it on at least one other occasion: To celebrate the Queen Mum's 100th birthday.

I actually applaud Anne for recycling her clothes. First of all, it's remarkable that 8 years later she still fits into one of her outfits. Heavens knows I couldn't fit into something I wore last year let alone 8 years ago. And with all the royal engagements she carries on, it's highly unpractical, whether you are frugal or not, to wear a different outfit each and every time.

That being said however, I do wish that on such a special occasion as this, of her brother's, who is to be the future King, marriage she could've splurged and gotten something new. Then she could wear that outfit for the next 8 years for all I care.

Yes,Princess Anne often recycle her outfit many times. The outfit at Prince Charles's Wedding she worn it the last time was at the Queen Mother's 100th birthday.

I appreciate the fact that Anne recycles her clothes - good for her for choosing to wear an outfit on several occasions!

However, sometimes I feel she looks a little old-fashioned, I mean, James suggests the outfit she wore for Charles' wedding is thirty years old! I think Anne is a pretty woman, and if she cut her hair into a modern style and wore more fashionable clothes, she would look great, and much younger than fifty-four! I'm surprised that with Anne having a very fashion-conscious daughter that she isn't a little more fashion-conscious herself.
