Charles II (1630-1685)

Today is Oak Apple Day for royalists.

It's 356 years since King Charles II returned to the throne. God Save The Queen!

Worcester celebrates the restoration of the monarchy in Oak Apple Day. (From Malvern Gazette)

Oak Apple Day was once widespread throughout Britain. People wore sprigs of oak and gilded oak apples in their lapels. There were at one time special commemorative Church services held on the 29th May, but gradually, through the 19th century Oak Tree Day became forgotten, and only celebrated in certain towns and villages, mainly in the west of England, as above.

Charles II was a daring young man. He enjoyed the luxuriousness of his father's court.

Charles II founded the Royal Hospital in Chelsea for old soldiers and laid the foundation stone for its stylish building by Sir Christopher Wren.

Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, the Lord Chancellor encouraged King Charles II to uphold constitutional government. Clarendon's popularity was weakened by the expensive failure in 1667 of the Second Dutch War. King Charles turned his back on him.

As Charles II was born in 1630 he’d hardly be farewelling anyone in 1623. The sketch commemorates the abortive journey to Spain of the young future Charles I with his father’s favourite, the Duke of Buckingham.

Its the future Charles I as there were Anglo-Spanish marriage negotiations for the hand of the Infanta Maria Anna of Spain and the future king.

There was certainly great rejoicing among the ordinary people of England at the restoration of the monarchy after the rather dour Interregnum years.
