Upon the order of Queen Victoria of England, Prince Maximilian of Baden (1867-1929) was brought to Darmstadt in the Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine as a suitor for Victoria's granddaughter, Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine. Alix rejected Prince Max. She married Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.
