The Grotto

I like the fake lake/grotto where he would peddle in in a swanlike boat while listening to Wagner.
Here is a pic of the Neuschwanstein grotto, plus a pic of Ludwig's gaudy bedroom at Linderhoff...

went to linderhoff too, the thing I remember most was the enormous waiting line (a few buses with visitors from Japan) just to get into a sort of small bonbonbox.

The grotto looks better in the movie when you can see it "alive". Have not been to Herrenchiemsee but love the scene where romy schneider who plays sissi for the last time has a fit of laughter when she sees the Hall of Mirrors which is a copy of the one in versaille, because of the extravagance.

Loved the palace in munchen because they told us it had been totally bombed at the end of WWII and a room a year was restored according to small swatches of wall paper and material they still had.

Leeds Castle has always been my personal favorite. It seems so peaceful there.

Interiors of Castles and Other Royal Homes

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if we could start a thread with any photos of the interiors of palaces, royal homes, etc. I know the pics are probably few and far between but I'd love to see what we could come up with!

Thanks!

but what about dinning rooms, ball room and reception rooms? what takes place during a dinner? what determins who sits by whom? how many courses do they eat when dinning? when are reception rooms use for? when the royals have balls, what do they dance to? do they waltz, minuet or do they get down-n-boggie? are there any pics of the happens at any of these events? if so, who takes the pictures?
just a few questions, i hope someone can answer.

I think it depends on the occasion, but if it's a normal official dinner - I would say it's the Court protocol, the country in question's Order of Precedence/Rank/State Calendar (it varies what kind of form for the official rank of people that is published in and how it's done) together with any special wishes of the hosts and the Court's decisions while doing the seat placement.

It depends on the occasion. And I guess the tradition varies between the different countries.

In Sweden when the King and Queen host their official dinners (there's a number of official dinners, diplomat receptions etc per year), there's usually a three course menu - entrée, main course, dessert.

thx everyone for the answers to my questions. all of the pics are amazing, while looking at the pics of the spanish castle's dinning room. i counted five drinking glasses at each place setting, thats a lot of drinking going on and the dining table is so long. i bet u could fit at least 75 people at that table. just think if u were mad an anyone u could sit them at the oppsite end of the table and it would be impossible to see them because of the distance and table decorations.
but again, all of the pic are very pretty

Although I am head over heals for the Château de Versailles, I do confess that I would much rather reside in another dear favourite of mine....that being...

Le Château de Fontainebleau (Île-de-France)

Peterhof is probably my favorite, there's just something about the staircases and fountains that makes it so beautiful but all the palaces are just amazing... if anyone is really interested in royal palaces I'd suggest Royal Palaces edited by M. Morelli, it's loaded with pictures of palaces from each country, throne rooms, bedchambers, chapels, theatres etc. and explains a lot of history. Here are a few of the palaces mentioned in the book w/ some photos I've found online:

Caserta Palace (Naples, Italy):

Google Maps: Royal Palaces!

Since I have gmail, I get updates on the latest news from Google. I was pleasantly surprised to see some Google maps in more European countries! The first thing I thought of (after checking out the Eiffel Tower and Grand Canal) was looking to see if there were satelite photographs of various royal palaces. I found quite a few (Schloß Wolfsgarten and the Neues Palais in Potsdam which is huge, and Versailles on the French one is amazing from the top!) So I thought everyone else might like to check it out and see if they can find any royal palaces!

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/04/google-maps-in-europe.html Enjoy! :D

Maybe it's a nice idea to post some screenshots!
I made one of Versailles (which is so impressive, I went there last summer to enjoy the gardens, I saw the interiors five or six years ago and now I longed to see the gardens. They were soooo beautiful!)

We have few threads about Royal Castles, Palaces but nothing about nobles homes:(

Than If you know any interesting castles, palaces, manors etc. which still belongs or belonged to the noble families from the whole world post them:)

This is Traquair House which is the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. it belongs to the Maxwell Stuart family. The Bear Gates you see in one of the pictures were closed after bonnie prince Charlie rode through them and have never been opened since. They will only be re-opened when a Stuart sits on the throne of Scotland.

Traquair House is a place I would definately like to visit. It has so much history and relics and the grounds look spectacular! Looks like we will be waiting a long time for the Bear Gates to be opened again though!

The house where they filmed that is stunning. It's called Ardverikie House, on the shores of Loch Laggan. The public can now book weddings and functions there. Here is the official site of the estate :
http://www.ardverikie.com/

It used to belong to Sir William Pennington Ramsden, who died in 1987 and then his daughter Phyllida Gordon Duff Pennington, inherited it. Queen Victoria came to stay at Ardverikie for a month in August 1847.

I just discovered a new castle yesterday. That is, it is a new discovery for me, obviously the castle itself is not new. I saw the pictures on Corbis. It is located in Ireland and is presently a convent school. Everything from the environs, with the lake, and everything, to the castle itself is fabulous. It is embedded in a valley, sort of perched on the lakeside.
Maybe it is a riverside actually, now that I look at the pictures again, it seems like a river.
here is one
It is called Kylemore Abbey
breathtaking

That is a good find, CasiraghiTrio. Kylemore Abbey is stunning. It seems like the perfect setting for a thriller novel. Its so gloomy, which is what I like!
