Monarchist Groups & the European Far-Right

I think this might have been discussed elsewhere but I'm interested in the connections between the European monarchies both current and former, Monarchist groups and the European far right, as there seems to be considerable overlap between the two in some cases.

I was thinking about this as in a lot of countries which have lost their monarchies (Italy, Germany, France etc...) there are often ties between monarchist groups and certain segments of the far right as local laws often forbid the use of former facist/nazi regalia and symbols, so they hide behind monarchist instead - somthing which causes more mainstream legit monarchists a great deal of distress, particularly if those monarchies were linked with the far right during the 1930s. Likewise some pretenders are closer to these groups than is good for comfort - Vittorio Emmanualle di Savoia is the prime modern example but there are others.

On the other hand the far right in countries like Sweden and the U.K are often republican in thinking as their monarchies are deemed to be too foreign in terms of ancestry or too liberal politically - I know for a fact that there is a strong republican strain in parties like UKIP and the Sweden Democrats respectively.

It seems that what's happening is that these groups use monarchism to make often unpalatable social and sometimes economic views look more digestible to the public, and others try to adopt republican stances to look more progressive, depending on where they are and what kind of audience they are pitching to, i don't think that's the whole case as local conditions play a role as well.

This isn't about the relationship between far right regimes and monarchies during the interwar period as that was mostly motivated by anti communisim more than anything else and is covered in other threads on this site. This is about what's happening in contempary Europe and espically the fears over Islam, culture, and immigration. Does anyone else have anything to say about this?

Perhaps the most famous one is the Action Française the French monarchust group that started as a movement against Dreyfus and that collaborated with the Nazi's. The late countess of Paris even received a tiara from the group.

Marion Maréchal Le Pen of the Front National attended a meeting of the AF last year.

Thanks Marengo, that's interesting as I was under the impression that the modern FN had moved away from the monarchist groups under Marine Le Pen's leadership and was making a point of emphasising "Republican Values" in an attempt to appeal to former leftists.

I remember hearing somewhere that Geert Wilders (and a lot of the Dutch far right) also has republican leanings too - can anyone comment on that? Or is this just part of his gadfly persona?

I know for a fact as well that Golden Dawn in Greece have been trying to get monarchist groups on board for some time, which was part of the reason CP Pavols attending the Trump inaugration looked really bad.

republicans are a very small minority in ukip they hold no postions in the party or office. most ukper are monarchist (they have kingdom in their name)) swedish democrats will not abolish the monarchy if they gain power ((hopefully they gain power)) they are nationalists plus they got better things to do then abolish the monarchy national front is something of a coin toss i think they arent going to restore the monarchy but they have monarchist in them. and geert wilders is not a republican this rumor that he is came from comments again him and his party by the former queen wilders just want the monarch to be a figuerhead and a majority of the party supporters are monarchist but they are republicans supporters but they are a minority and again I dont see them going after the monarchy if they hopefully gain power in the future.

Which crown prince? If you are talking Jordan, CP Hussein graduated from Georgetown in 2016 (where Tiffany is going to law school). CP Pavlos graduated from law but way back in 1995.

Wilder's party (PVV) proposed a completely ceremonial monarch in 2011. Most parties (except the three christian parties) in parliament want to somehow restrict the king's influence (which they did by no longer giving the monarch an important role after elections). However, there are two left-wing parties that specifically call for a republic in their program: the SP (Socialist Party, most left wing party in Dutch system) and GroenLinks (let wing progressive party). D66 (slightly right wing progressive party) includes several republicans among its members and representatives as well.
