hehe, thanks.

Would Victoria be wearing that sash the other way because she's crown princess and will someday rule, while her brother and sister won't? (presuming she doesn't abdicate of course.)I believe her mother wears it the same way...

no...Victoria is wearing the danish order (Order of the Elephant). Madeleine and Carl Philip don't have the Danish order yet, they are wearing the Swedish order (Order of the Seraphim).

These sashes look exactly the same (from what I can tell) so the only difference is the Swedish Sash goes over the right shoulder and the Danish sash goes over the left shoulder.

as someone said above, some sashes go over one shoulder, while other's go over the other. I'm not sure what determines this (for example: the Icelandic highest order has the sash going over the left shoulder) but it's just how it is.

Thanks for explaining! I had been really confused about that for a pretty long time. :)

So if the person is the monarch, heir or married to one they wear the ribbon left shoulder to right hip and if the person is not likely to accede they wear it right shoulder to left hip?
I'm sorry if I am only repeating other comments but I have not been able to find any information on the subject, which is frustrating for me. :( :(

Complexity rules!

Don't worry Layla1971, we're still asking the same questions. It seems that all the different orders have their own rules regarding left-to-right or right-to-left; then there are the under-the-armpit and the across-the-shoulder methods of draping the sash. Unfortunately it isn't as simple as "the Monarch wears it this way and the heir's wife wears it that way". Much more complex than that!
.

No :)
This is very funny.
Because The Order of Seraphin wear right shoulder. That you see at a danish event, and the Seraphin and The Elephant order is very similar colour. The Crown Princess of Sweden wear the Elephant danish order (whivh is wore at left shoulder), and her brother/sister haven't got danish order, they were wear their Seraphin swedish order. :)

It think you think Queen Anne-Marie & King konstantin. Queen Anne-Marie was wear The Order of Elephant at her left shoulder. King Konstantin was wear Order of Reedemer. The orders wear site doesn't change!

Yes... Princess Anne was appointed to that Order for bravery during a kidnap attempt in 1974--a knighthood for swearing, so to speak. :)

I think it is interesting to find some picures of royals who wear their ribbons incorrectly.

The Shah of Iran wears both the Collar and the Sash of the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav on this photo. Those insignia are not to be used together.

The practice of wearing both the Collar and Star/Sash of an Order very much so depends on the situation, the reason for wearing the particular order, and seniority of the order.

There are cases when the they are worn together.

The statute of this particular order does not allow for it. The order badge, which is hanging from the ribbon on the photo, should've been attached to the collar.

Has some photos of Queen Rania with the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav?

Ahh yes Mapple, I see what you mean. I admit to not knowing as much of foreign Orders as those of the United Kingdom. You don't have the same trouble with the Order of the Garter. The 'Lesser George' pendant suspended from the sash, is very different to the arms suspended from the collar.

Yes, the Order of Garter has two different pendants. Nevertheless, Knights of the Garter do not wear the collar and the sash simultaneously. The best example is the Duke of Edinburgh, who wears the collar of the Order of the Garter and the sash of the Order of the Thistle at the State Opening of Parliament.

no. being the heir or monarch has nothing to do with the way you wear your sash. It depends on the sash. As I said, The Danish Order of the Elephant's sash goes from your left shoulder to your right hip, while the Swedish Order of the Seraphim's sash goes from your right shoulder to your left hip.

however, not everyone is going to have the same sash. For example, King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, and Crown Princess Victoria have the Danish order of the Elephant, while P Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip don't. Some members of a family may have one sash, while other's wont.

When wearing the mantle and cap, (generally only once a year, at the annual service of the Order of the Garter at St. George's chapel, the Soverign, Royal Knights, extra Knights and Knights of the Order do wear the sash and collar simulaneously.

That's interesting.

Yes, I've forgotten about that occasion. But it is a once-a-year event when the Knights are dressed not to 'general' etiquette standards.
