Bowing and Curtseying

I mean, if a lady like doing very deep curtsies, then do so, but one have to remember it's not meant to look like some exercise. It's just a quick bounce really. It appears that if you're greeting a senior royal or someone else, that person have to use alittle upper arm strength to pull you back up. It can get too dramatic and cute.

I get the distinct feeling that when I see someone do a very low, formal curtsy that I'm watching a scene out of The King and I. To me, it seems very overdone. The quick bobs of respect are perfect for me.

Then again, no matter what kind of curtsy I'd ever attempt, I'd end up flat on my face.

Same here...I had to end ballet lessons as a girl because I simply grew too tall!
There is no way I'd manage a correct curtsey. My hats off to all the Royal ladies who have to execute them!

I can do the full, practically to the floor courtly curtseys, guess years of gymnastics help my balance. But when done in pants looks awkward as hell. Having long skirts back in the day made it look more graceful. I tested my theory in my grad dress, and a full skirted bridesmaid dress, seems true.

Honestly I don't mind either deep or shallow. As long as it is graceful. If you can't do a quick deep curtsey, a bob us a better choice.

I like the overall effect...a flowing, graceful, well-executed dip. I agree that an exaggerated low curtsy looks silly and theatrical.

But from what I've seen, Kate Cambridge is simply not one of the better ones. She just seems awkward and self-conscious.

The best I have noticed are the two Swedish princesses(CP Victoria and Princess Madeleine), the late Diana Princess of Wales, HGD Stephanie of Luxembourg, Mary of Denmark and yes Lady Nimue is right about Sophie Wessex.

She seems born to it!

ETA: The less said about the late Lady Thatcher by me the better. But it doesn't surprise me one bit that she made a fool out of herself before the queen, attempting a grand curtsy!

lol @ Kate Cambridge - where did this come from??

Well one day Kate will be Queen Consort and she won't have to worry about how well she curtesy anymore.

If Charles is as long lived as the Queen then Kate may be well into her 50's (or early 60's) before that day ever arrives!

I remember reading an article some years back where Kate gave her name as either Mrs. Cambridge or Catherine Cambridge to a (think it was an outdoors wear supplier) shop owner, who was told afterwards who she was. Kate Cambridge, same as Sophie Wessex.

Pippa did indeed execute a very deep curtsey on her way back up the isle. Hopefully no such worries for her this time round!

I'm no expert on the dos and don'ts of curtseying, but have no doubt Kate sought and got expert advise in that department along with all other things royalty related. If she appears a bit stilted, (does she?) it's not something you do everyday after all.

How can these ladies manage such deep curtsies (in heels, no less), when I start wobbling if I go too low, even barefoot! I started practicing my curtsy for my end-of-year piano and vocal recital wearing short wedges (which are narrow at the back) in my parents' carpeted ensuite bathroom (the only place in the house with a full-length mirror) with my left arm held out to the side, and I still almost fell over!

Who should imagine kisses to everybody at Infanta Sofia's Communion. Well done !

I can do a good curtsey but I can't even imagine in a kimono. The skirt of one can't be easy. But I guess she has plenty of practice at it. :flowers:

beautiful curtsy in her kimono. love how she used her country's traditional dress in a traditional country like Bhutan.

By the way, does anyone have any other pics of Princess Anne curtsying? (besides her wedding of course, and the ones of her curtsying to Harald and Sonja.)

Lovely curtesy! I home Camilla is watching.

I'm amazed by the agility of Anne, her figure is great for 66.
Camilla was properly bashed by some because she's not able anymore to do those low curtseys. But she has some well known back problems and clearly has not the same fitness than her in laws...

]Yes, osteoporosis is a family problem with both her mother and grandmother living in chronic pain and dying from its complications.

I remember Zara showing how it was done and seeing Anne curtsey it's easy to see who taught her and how well.

Well said. I am not a fan of curtseys but this one with the full on eye contact between the older Princess (albeit Princess Royal) and the younger King delighted me no end. It may be my favorite curtsey ever.
And I also am amazed at her ability to pull this off. In fact, I'm going to take the photo to my yoga instructor and ask her to help me get to that level. ;)

Excellent! Very regal and correct

Wow, that's the deepest I've seen Anne curtsy since her wedding, before she and Mark left the Abbey! (which was 17 years before I was born, but I have seen video footage.)

FYI Nico, she will be 67 a month tomorrow.
