Actually Prince Henrik quit smoking sigarettes many years ago when he had his back surgery. He used a walking stick at J&A's engagement may 1995 so he did quit before that. Queen Margrethe is well known as a chain-smoker, but her staff has told she has cut back since her back surgery january 2003. Prince Joachim defends his right to smoke even when carrying his son on his shoulder. I believe Princess Alexandra has cut down on the smoking to become a party smoker only. Crown Princess Mary has not been a smoker.

I don't think smoking really affect your looks until later in life. Just an observation: take Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Princess Margaret, and Princess Grace. All were about the same age (Audrey, Jackie, and Grace were all born in 1929; Margaret in 1930). All were great beauties and looked very youthful in the 50s and early 60s. When they hit about age 35, you notice in pictures that Audrey, Jackie, and Margaret -all heavy smokers- seem to age all of a sudden: their skin begin to wrinkle (even though they were still beautiful women). On the other hand, Grace -who did not smoke (at least not regularly) although she did puff a cigarette in one scene of Rear Window- kept her youthful looks well into her forties (that and she had great genes). Even Caroline (still very beautiful) has aged more quickly than her mother at her age.

In Denmark, smoking was not a big deal until recently. Even in America, it wasn't until the 80s that smoking became taboo. You can't look at photos taken in the early 70s and criticise the Danes because they're probably like most Danish smokers at the time, thinking nothing of lighting up in front of the kids. Even now, the smoking taboo hasn't entrenched itself in Denmark, so while Joachim may be criticised for smoking in front of his kid (some think the kid has asthma), it's not going to be anywhere near as ferocious as if he did it in the US.

Maybe that's why Frederik and Joachin became smokers - it wasn't a big deal for their father smoking in front of his children.
And maybe smoke has something to do with Queen Margrethe looks. She seems so old, she seems older than Queen Elizabeth, who is almost 80. Queen Margrethe is younger than Queen Sofia and Queen Beatrix but they seem younger and much more healthy.

unbelievable that he smokes with his son so near to him, bad exemple to give to other adults.
it is well known that the lungs of children are more vulnerable to second hand smoke than those of an adult. Many west european countries adults are even protected against it by law

I remember Maxima puffing away while Laurentien and her baby sat next to her. It was truly disgusting. I hope that she gave up the habit during her own pregnancies.

I think the previous poster was refering to the latter. Although personally I think she looks old because of all the work she's had done over the last few years. I doubt she smokes.
