Godparents

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I find it strange how few members of the BRF are chosen to be godparents: HM,the Earl of Wessex, the late princess Diana and the duke of Edinburgh are just some but I find that Constantine II is by far a popular godfather.

Maybe you mean that they're not popular as godparents to other european royal children? As we know the BRF are notoriously distant with royal houses on the continent.

Thank you. These are very sweet. Victoria seems to be quite involved with her godchildren.

I don't know if this was mentioned on the thread or not, but Prince William is one of the godparents to Constantine Alexios (a grandson I believe of King Constantine of Greece). I remember seeing pictures of him and Princess Madeleine of Sweden at the Baptism in the summer of 1999.

List of godchildren of members of the British Royal Family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not quite sure what you mean here. Each member of the BRF seem to have a number of godchildren, although they are largely from British families. I suspect part of the reason for fewer foreign royal godchildren would be the distance the BRF maintain from their continental relations and also the BRF are a bit older than the current crop of continental royal parents.

There are no Rosie Bush (Peter Phillips' goddaughter) on this list.

And I read on some site (I cannot find it now) that Prince of Wales is the godfather of a posthumous daughter of major Hugh Lindsay who was killed by an avalanche during a winter vacation in Switzerland in 1988 (Prince Charles was also there, Princess Diana and Duchess of York)

Here are some updates to your list:

Prince Wenceslas of Nassau:
Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este, Prince of Belgium (This isn't right as he is Carl-Johann's godfather.)

Prince Carl-Johann of Nassau:
Prince Nikolaus of Liechtenstein (Per christening article and pictures in PdV, not Nikolaus but Lorenz)
Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este, Prince of Belgium
Princess Marie Gabrielle de Lobkowicz

Prince Jean of Luxembourg :
Princess Margrethe of Denmark (I believe this should be Princess Margrethe of SWEDEN who was Josephine-Charlotte's late mother, Queen Astrid's, sister)
Prince Felix of Luxembourg (his paternal grandfather)

Prince Felix of Luxembourg:
Prince Jean of Luxemburg
Catalina Mestre Esteve (sister of Grand Duchess Maria Teresa)

Prince Louis of Luxembourg:
Princess Margaretha of Luxembourg
Javier Sanz (mutual friend of Maria Teresa and Henri who introduced them to each other; Prince Louis's middle name is the French version of Javier, "Xavier," in his godfather's honor.)

Princess Margaretha was princess of Sweden and Norway by birth, later princess of Sweden, and princess of Denmark by marriage. Her title after her marriage was: Hendes Kongelige Højhed prinsesse Margaretha af Danmark.

Princess Michael of Kent is a godmother to Princess Maria Chiara of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Maria Chiara's father, Carlo, is also a godfather to Princess Josephine of Denmark.

Also, The Earl of Wessex is a godfather to Prince Nikolai of Denmark.

I believe King Albert ii is godfather to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg

Yes, King Albert II of the Belgians is indeed the godfather of his nephew Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg.
Henri's godmother is his paternal aunt, Princess Marie Gabrielle of Luxembourg.

According to Wikipedia, The Prince of Wales is a godfather to Lady Sarah Chatto's eldest son, Samuel Chatto. I'm probably really late to the party, but I honestly didn't know that. That's so lovely, it seems that Charles and Sarah are quite close.

:previous: Thanks for the link Archduchess Zelia. :) I too didn't know that, and Charles being a godfather to Princess Maria-Olimpia of Greece, Lord Nicolas Windsor and the Earl of Ulster is also new to me.

Historically, Mary I's godparents were Catherine of York, Thomas Wolsey and Agnes Howard, Duchess of Norfolk. Elizabeth I's godparents were Thomas Cranmer, Henry Courtenay, Marquess of Exeter, Elizabeth Howard, Duchess of Norfolk and Margaret Wotton, Dowager Marchioness of Dorset. Edward VI's godparents were his sisters Mary and Elizabeth.

Princess Beatrix's godparents are Leopold III of Belgium, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, Elisabeth, Princess of Erbach-Schönberg, Duke Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenberg and Countess Allene de Kotzebue.

When a royal son or daughter has godparents, is it a religious and a royal rule that any godparent of the child must be the same religion as the child? For example: Princess Nora of Liechtenstein, a Catholic, is a godmother of Princess Laetitia-Maria of Belgium, a Catholic.

Thank you Archduchess Zelia and Ish for your information.

Cecily the Duchess of York and Jacquetta the Duchess of Bedford were the godmothers of their granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of King Edward IV of England.

Depends on the rules of the religion in the individual countries, I guess. Crown Princess Victoria (a lutheran-protestant) is godmother to Princess Eléonore of Belgium (a catholic), but Eléonore has two catholic godparents, Princess Claire of Belgium, and Count Sébastien von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg, as well. The Prince of Asturias (catholic) is also godfather to Prince Vincent of Denmark (a lutheran-protestant).

Typically Christian religion require that one of the child's godparents be of that religion, but not all of them have to be. So, if a royal baby is baptized Catholic and has 6 godparents, it's not a big deal if some of them aren't Catholic so long as some of them are.

Do we know if Queen Fabiola have any royal godchildren?

(I was sure there was a thread for godchildren as well but I failed to find one.)

Queen Fabiola had a lot of godchildren but not in royal circles. Every seventh daughter, named Fabiola was adopted as godchild by the Queen. Every seventh son, named Baudouin was adopted as godchild by the King. So the couple litterally had hundreds of godchildren...

I do't think that the Portuguese RF was mentioned here. So here we go:

Dom Duarte, Duke of Braganza:
- Pope Pius XII
- Queen Amelie of Portugal, nee Princess of Orleans
- Infanta Adelgundes, Duchess of Guimarães; Princess of Bourbon-Parma and Countess of Bardi by marriage.

Prince Afonso, Prince of Beira, Duke of Barcelos:
- Afonso Miguel de Herédia
- Princess Elena of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.

Infanta Maria Francisca:
Dom Henrique, Duke of Coimbra
Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, nee Pss of Orleans

Infante Diniz, Duke of Porto:
- Sebastião de Castro Curvello de Herédia,
- Princess Anna Cecilia of Bourbon-Two-Sicilies

I have no idea who the godparents of dukes of Viseu and Coimbra are.

Can anyone provide the godparents of the grandchildren of King Simeon and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria?

Archduke Ludwig of Austria (born November 11, 1998) had two godmothers: Furstin Maria Galitzine (sister of his father) and Cristina Lopez-Quesada (sister of his mother).

The godparents of Archduke Karl Pius of Austria were Pope Pius X and Infanta Adelgundes, Countess of Bardi.

Papal Godfather that didn't happen too often?

Have King Philippe of Belgium, Queen Silvia of Sweden and Queen Letizia of Spain any royal godchildren?

The godparents of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia were his grandfather Tsar Alexander II, his grandmother Queen Louise of Denmark, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia.

Have King Philippe of Belgium, Queen Silvia of Sweden and Queen Letizia of Spain any royal godchildren?

Queen Letizia has no royal godchildren. Prince Daniel of Sweden also has no royal godchildren.

I don't know if Queen Silvia has any royal godchildren.

I haven't seen information that queen Silvia would have royal godchildren, but she is the godmother of Victor Magnuson, son of princess Christina.
