I think Mette Marit looks very sad... If i look at her chin it looks like she is going to cry.

Mette-Marit was crying in this picture - I saw it on tv.

From Newscom.
Another sad royal: Crown Prince Philippe at the funeral of Josephine-Charlotte.

And i'm sure that The Queen has cried when Diana died but she did not show her grief in public. And maybe Diana is not so close to her,so she did not show her grief in public. And at Princess Margaret's funeral, she cried in public because Princess Margaret is so close to her.Margaret and Elizabeth has been given birth from the same Mum,they grew up together, and they have lived for long time so it's certainly she show so much emotional at Princess Margaret's funeral.

The British Royals did not show much emotion at Diana's funeral but I think they upset some members the British public when they openly had tears in their eyes at the decommisioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia!!!!!!!

very true!, i remember that, they cried in public when that yacht was ending its days but not when diana died. I would have thought Diana is more important than a yacht! But i understand the family have their reasons,

The tears were sentimental tears as "Britannia" must have held a lot of memories for all members of the Royal Family. But like you I would have considered Diana to be more important that the yacht.

Scott

Well Diana did hurt the royal family during the breakup years. Plus, I dont think the most of the Royals were close to Diana. The Royal Yacht was a second home. The whole family grew up there and had very special memories of many voyages and experiences. Its like watching the house you grew up in burn to the ground in a way. Its emotional but the BRF never make sense with what they do. If they did then they wouldnt be the Royal Family we now.

Prince Rainier at the opening of the Monte Carlo Circus Festival January 21, 2005.

It's hard looking at these pictures of Rainier- poor little thing- He never did get over the loss of Princess Grace- he absolutely adored her and I think he died that day too :( To me that was the day that Princess Caroline matured into a woman and was there for him - a shoulder to cry on - she also lost her best friend..
He reminds me of my dad so it is hard for me to see pics of him without feeling sad.

"In my opinion as long as they're crying over something valid that's fine. I mean you don't want robots for a Royal Family.
If they're running around crying all the time over nothing (which they're not) then that would be a problem."

Absolutely, there are occasions and events when it is appropriate to show grief. Personally I'd like to see the Royal Family (British) display a bit more emotion, they way they all act so regimented makes them seem so cold and unfeeling.

Moreover it should be pointed out that in some cultures crying is viewed to be a very natural part of the grieving and not something to be ashamed of.

Following the Amman bombings tere were some very emotional pictures of Quen Rania:

FEELING????? What is that ???? (fore some ofthe royals????)

Hi

If we want to recapitulate, IMO the most human in public are by far the Spain's and the Monaco's, followed by the Dutches!!!!

And the last in the queue!!!! The British !!!!!!!! Sorry, I know that I may hurt some of you, but I can not avoid to express my feeling. Prince Philip of Edinborough never seems hurt of anything !!!!! always like a marble statue!!!!!! Either he never feels anything  , or he's always hidding SOOOOO DEEPLY his feelings, what an achievement !!!!

I think must have emotional royals in the british royal family too, but I think they just dont show their feeling
like... Prince william didn't cry in his mother funeral, but all we know he was veryyyy sad ;D
know what I mean?

I think he was raised like that.I mean long ago, that was how men were, well, MEN.They hid their emotions and didn't cry because that meant they were tough. So I actually feel sad for him.:)

There is a photo of Queen Margrethe in the Christening of Prince Christian...
I thought that i will never see a photo of Queen Margrethe crying!   She seems to be "cold"... i'm saying that because even in the funeral of her mother i never saw a photo of her crying.

A member of this forum who claims to be royal told me there is a rule against royals showing emotion in public which was established by Queen Victoria of England...is that true?

Hi Hillary, I'm curious can you share who is the member who claims to be royal? What title he/she claims? It would be very interesting for him/her to give us some inside knowledge, don't you think? Thanks:)

She did too cry at her mother's funeral! She was wearing a black covering over her face, so it was difficult for photographers to see (which I'm sure was the point). I saw a video and it was obvious that Queen Margrethe was crying over the loss of her mother, Queen Ingrid. I also read an older autobiography by Queen Margrethe, and she admits that she used to think it was not her place to cry, but as she aged she knew she couldn't help it and so she just accepts it and goes with it whenever she tears up. Quite a classy lady, in my opinion.

Sorry... but i saw some photos and like you said it was difficult to see her crying.

I think most royals of Queen Margrethe's generation are more conserative and perhpas taught at a young age not to show too much emotion in public. Just look at QEII...

That's right!!
But some Queens show their emotions, like Queen Sofia! But i think that now they show it because they can't hide them!

In general I would say that American males aren't comfortable with showing emotion (and my guess is that is true of British males of Philip's generation too). Additionally, I think that Philip had a difficult early life (was pretty much neglected by his parents) and probably had to learn to suppress visible emotion. (Now, I'm not saying that he's the easiest person you could pick to be a parent/husband/relative, but I think he does have feelings -- after all, his grandchildren seem to love him and enjoy his company and they wouldn't if they didn't sense love and approval coming from him.)

Yes Philip had a rather nasty and unfair childhood. I think his stiffness and coldness helped him survive through the difficult times and the war.

I dont like it when Monarchs are overly emotional. I like the Queens stoic nature. It shows a great deal of strenght and when she does cry like at the 9/11 memorial service and at her mums funeral her emotions make a much bigger impact.

Also, the young Princes of wales did cry at their mums funeral but the camera men were ordered to not show them during the actuall funeral service. It was said that they actually broke down and very pretty shaken up. It must have been a really hard day for them. I was proud at how strong they were during the procession.

Telling a child to suppress their tears and grief is one of the worst things you can do. I surpressed my tears at my mother (who died only a few weeks before Diana)'s funeral, and it's extremely unhealthy for your soul.

I think that Philip's offering to walk beside William at the funeral procession shows what sort of relationship they have. I felt very deep respect for the Duke when I read about that.

I read an article that said everyone has the same emotions, but they don't all have access to their emotions in the same situation.

The article said that people don't need to hide their emotions in public for it not to show; they may not have access to their emotions when they're surrounded by a lot of people. It's like a faucet with hot and cold water. If the hot water is your emotions and the cold water is your thinking, for some people the hot water faucet can pour out more emotions when they are alone or with one or two people. For others, the hot water faucet pours out more emotion when they're with a large group.

One is not more emotional than the other. The person who shows a lot of emotion in front of a crowd may be very unemotional with one or two people.

I know what you mean. For me at funerals I dont look sad though I feel it. Its just looking at so many sad people makes me feel like I need to be different. In public I just dont cry or get overly emotional.

I'm the same Johnny. My family hardly ever cry, apart from the Venezualan side of the family. At family funerals they tend to sob like mad. In private, I will cry but never in public. I don't think it's at all dignified. Some people love to be wrapped up in grief and they wail and they shriek and generally make an exhibition of themselves which is absolutely cringe-making to watch.

I usually don't cry in public either. Usually, I'm just not able to.
