Also Queen Sonja has gotten i trouble with the bunad police, she had not placed her brooch on the shirt but on the dress, and had not folded down her collar on her "Rondestakk" She really upset the locals who wrote to the paper about it;)

Ari Behn wearing his new bunad in the CP wedding, no complaints on him!!

Haakon and Mette-Marit, both in Bunad before the wedding.

Another picture from the same happening in Valdres, before the marriage. /SCANPIX

Haakon wears a bunad from Fana, outside of Bergen, which he, according to VG, received when he was stationed in Bergen as part of his military service.

Mette-Marit wears a Jelsa bunad from Rogaland. You can see that this picture is taken before the marriage, as her belt is black, save for the silver buckle. Women who are married have a wife-belt, covered in silver. This is probably to show that their husbands are wealthy, and that the woman is taken. You can see example of that belt from the picture Mandy posted above.

What a wonderful idea for a thread, Mandy and norwegianne!

The traditional Norwegian costume is very beautiful. It seems that the traditional costume for men is usually the same but from these pictures I supposed the women must wear different ones when visiting different parts of Norway. Any idea on how many of these traditional costumes the Queen, Mette-Marit and Martha Louise each possess?

A few more images of the lovely Norwegian costume to add to this lovely thread Mandy and norwegianne have started.

The male costumes do vary, most of them do have the basic black jacket and pants, but there are some where it happens in other colours, like white. If you see Ari and Haakon's bunads, there's plenty of differences between them. The male bunads can have hats, or not. The number of buttons on the vest may vary, as may the socks, the shirt, the vest, etc.

Sonja is definitely the one who has the most bunads, though I wouldn't try to make an estimate even. She wears the Asker, and the Telemark bunad, the most often. But she has others.

Märtha has a Telemark, an Asker, one from Setesdal (which was used mostly when she danced folk dances.) I also think she has one from Hardanger. There might be others here as well.

Mette-Marit has the Jelsa bunad, which she has had since her confirmation. She also has a Hardanger bunad, methinks. I'm relatively sure that if it hasn't happened yet, she will get an Asker bunad.

I heard that Ingrid Alexandra would get a bunad from Agder, once upon a time (it was mentioned in the media at the time of her birth.) But I would presume that she will end up with more than enough bunads from all over the country.

What presisely Astrid and Ragnhild has, I'm unsure about.

i didn't know the typical dress of norway was called a bunad. many thanks, it's really precise that say which talks about learning at least one new thing everyday. that was mine today :)
how many bunads are there in norway? maybe each city has its own?

There are quite a lot, almost all the districts have their own. To put it like that. There are some from each district which have grown more known than others, but there are still a lot.

Thanks for all the great pictures Mandy!

Is it traditional for students to wear their bunads to graduation? And if so, is there a special bunad that they wear or do they simply wear the one from the region they are from?

Its quit common to wear them for your graduation, but there is no special. Bunads are very expensive so most people only have one. Many girls gets their for their confirmation (aged 14-15) and it is made so that you can grow in it, but still if you compare your body when you are 14 and when you are 40 and have had a couple of children I think you can understand thet there is many who go on a quick diet before national day approaches, and those who make them are run down with women whos bunad has mysteriously gotten smaller;)

There is absolutly no stretch in a bunad, so a very good measure to see if you are the same weight as last year...

Nobody I know has ever worn a bunad for graduation.

But most females get one for their confirmation when they're 14, just one, as they're really expensive. The trick is to have lots of extra material as inseam, to be able to let out after you've had a couple of children or so... but still, there are a lot of diets around the 17th of May... Can't imagine why

Thank you Larzen and norwegianne for the answers to my question about bunads and graduations.

A pretty tall task to ask of women to stay the same size as when they are in their early teens and to maintain that size after they have had children and whose bodies change through time so that they can fit into these bunads. A lot of pressure ...
