Centenary of Norway Independece

On celebrating the cetenary of Norway Independence,i make this thread to post information about Norway since the day of independence, and photos of that great event. On part of that event:prince Haakon and Princess Mette Marrits had visited Thailand.King Harald and Queen Sonja will make their official visit to The United Kingdom and The United States of America.

There's a lot of things going on from now until 2005 ends.

The King and Queen will also make a state visit to Denmark, in November next year, since it was the first country that officially recognized Norway as an independent nation.

We have something special planned to celebrate the anniversary here at The Royal Forums, so stay tuned in 2005 as well.

In the year when the anniversary actually occurs, 2005. :)

Official Program for next year:
In the end of January: Crown Princess Mette-Marit visits Malawi for a week.

January 31st, Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette-Marit will be present when an exhibit on Queen Maud is opened in the Victoria and Albert museum.

In February Crown Prince Haakon likely will visit Sierra Leone with UNDP.

Around then Queen Sonja will visit Antarctica.

In the end of February the King and Queen will travel to USA. They will visit New York, Washington DC and Texas.

In April Crown Prince Haakon will travel to Japan, for the world exhibit.

In September the king and Queen will make a state visit to Sweden.

In October Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon will officially visit the USA: the Midwest.

In October Harald and Sonja will visit Britain.

In November Harald and Sonja will make a state visit to Denmark.

There will also be state visits to Norway by other royals, and many events in Norway in the summer.

Also in May,Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will pay their State Visit to Norway.
Very busy and happy year to Norway.

The visit of King Harald and Queen Sonja to The United Kingdom in October 2005,i think it is an official visit. But i think it will be an colourful and beautiful Welcoming Ceremony for celebrating the Norway's event. And it will be a State Banquet too.

Please post news and pictures the Norwegian Royal Family during Centenary events, celebrations and occasions. However, a separate thread will be created for each State Visit.
Enjoy the celebrations!

Is the ceremony still being broadcast on the tv? When will it end?

The ceremony at Stortinget ended about an hour ago, or so. There will be a new transmission tonight, on TV2.

Sun finally smiles on the Centennial

Oslo woke up to clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine on Tuesday, perfect weather to celebrate Norway's 100 years of independence in the country's capital. Thousands of flags flew in the breeze as the city geared for a day of colourful celebration.

Oslo's harbor is full of foreign vessels making courtesy calls, gracious old Tall Ships and a vast array of pleasure craft, with even the ferries that ply the fjord back and forth to the Nesodden peninsula decorated with signal flags.

Sunshine glittered on the deep blue waters of the Oslo Fjord early Tuesday morning as personnel at the ancient fortress that looms over the inner harbor once again fired the canons atop its stone walls. By 8:30am, officers in full dress uniform were milling about the plaza in front of the Oslo City Hall, getting ready to parade down the city's main drag, Karl Johans Gate, at 10am.

Tuesday's celebrations mark Norwegian politicians' decision on June 7, 1905 to break out of a union with Sweden that had existed for most of the 1800s. Before that, Norway had been under Danish rule for around 400 years, so the decision meant the formal beginning of an indendence process that lasted until late November, when Norway established its own monarchy and emerged as a sovereign nation.

The centennial celebrations so far have been marred somewhat by bad weather, financial problems and a general lack of enthusiasm among the population at large. But the festive atmosphere in downtown Oslo on Tuesday and sunny skies for the first time in weeks seemed likely to raise spirits.

Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik was spotted standing in the sunshine on the City Hall plaza near a trailer decked out with Swedish flags and the call letters for Sweden's national broadcasting unit, "Sveriges Television." The Swedish crew took photos of themselves, clearly ready to record the Norwegians' celebration of the end of their former union.

Over on Karl Johan's Gate, meanwhile, military personnel marked off the spaces where soldiers and The King's Guards would line up as King Harald, on his first day back at work, would ride from his palace down to the Parliament for a special mid-morning session to mark the nation's independence. The boulevard was decked out with Norwegian flags along the entire route, with more flags set up all around the parliament and flying atop every building on the street.

The National Theater, midway between the palace and the Parliament, even featured an old flag showing the Swedish colors in an upper corner, known as the "Herring Salad." The theater was decorated with red, white and blue banners, while some irreverent celebrants had tied a pink tutu around the waist of the statue of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, the late statesman best known for writing the country's national anthem.

Festivities were to continue all day, ending with a "party for the people" on the City Hall plaza Tuesday evening.

The King and Queen arrived at Stortinget to grand ovations today :)

does it have anything to do that sweden's national day was yesterday? :s

(Not very keen on scandinavian history)

As explained before, even very thin women look preganant when wearing a bunad, its really not the right attire to judge "bumps"

Yesterday (pink coat) they celebrated swedens national day, today is the 100th anniversarof Norway gaining independance of Sweden. The two event is not related

In this article ther is a aftenposten video, it takes a while to load though. You can see the Kings Guard and after that the royals arriving at stortinget and returning to the palace

Wow the royal family's wearing period costume at Drammen Theatre shows that these guys have a sense of humour and can enter into the spirit of things. I can't imagine anybody else (except perhaps the Danish royals) wearing period costumes at all. The things the Norwegian royals do are really impressive.

Princess Märtha Louise is supposed to attend the events this evening. We should remember that Princess Märtha Louise has to be asked to participate in a royal occasion She can't show up univited.:)
