Some bunads are cut in a way that the user almost always looks pregnant, whether being it or not. So, judging it in those outfits may not always be the most presise
The day is over, and my feet hurt.

The reason why some bunads are cut like that is because they are mostly modelled after the clothes worn by farmers in the 17-18 century, and in those days women often were pregnant non-stop (at least for a period of there lives), so the bunad is fashioned to accommodate that. Leaving it as you said to make women wearing bunads today look pregnant even if they aren't. The bunads cut comes in handy today too, because bunads are often worn in events where you are expected to eat a lot of good food (i.e. weddings, christenings, 17 of May, confirmations). And that you can do when it has a high waistline (even though most women finds their bunad a bit too snug)

Was it last night that Mette-Marit was travelling to Sweden, or is it another time?

It was cancelled after the pregnancy became known. She's cancelled some things since then, because of morning sickness, by orders of her doctors.

I will concur that bunads makes you look pregnant\fat. Imagine the thickest wool fabrik and then make pleats around the middel of your waiste, then add a underskirt and a thick belt. It aint slimming to say the least... I like Mette-Marits new bunad even if it is not the most colourful one. When it is warmer she can wear it without the jacket and there is a beautiful embroydert shawl that you can wear. There are several bunads from Vest Agder so I add a pic of Mette-Marits and links to see closup of the details and accessories. There is also an outragous head thing which I wonder if she will wear sometime. The bunad police will surly love her is she does as noone rarely wears them anylonger...

Later on national day Haakon also wore a "bunad" or I suspect it is the Oslo suit which is not a real bunad. The man next to him is the Mayor of Oslo wearing the same thing

You have Ingrid Alexandra in her pink coat... and then you have this picture of her father in a similar coat 31 years ago, on May 17th... Fashion is a strange thing.

Here is another look. It was October 10, 1974 at Skaugum when they were hosting King Carl Gustaf of Sweden. (dpa photo)
