Hmm, a mistake IMO. He could have arrived separately but still been there. Unless maybe he is no longer just her boyfriend.

That's a surprise; and suggests approval from the king and queen for this relationship while he does little else than bring damage to the institution they represent.

Did Mette Marit or Ari spend Christmas with the king and queen before they were engaged or married?

Unfortunately, they got a terrible message this afternoon (after the church service I suppose; I cannot imagine them attending had they received the news earlier) and everything else has become unimportant now...

In whatever pain Ari was, I hope the shaman attending didn't trigger something. Durek looked pretty full of himself at church, even wrapped his arm around the youngest daughter.

I found it a bit much, even more so after the terrible news about Ari. I certainly hope it didn't trigger anything. I understand Ari had been invited to join the RF for Christmas.

I don't think it was wise for Durek to attend the service and be so openly embracing towards Martha-Louise's family after the terrible news of Ari's passing.

I think the service took place before Ari's passing.

Yes, but it was still not the best of moves IMO.

I think when all three children get older it might get weird for certain royal events or maybe not. Who knows? But I found these pictures in the Norwegian Royals Celebrate Christmas thread and Marius's first Current Events thread and I have to say Haakon shows more affection towards Marius at times than Mette-Marit does and we know that Mette-Marit loves her son so I think that says a lot. More pictures .

How could this not be the best of moves if it was before A.s death?
Knowing Harald and Sonja it is no surprise to me they approved - they have always been wise enough to put family unity and the happiness of their children before anything else, even the interests of the institution of monarchy.
What would be alternative? Rejecting one`s daughters partner and risking a family rift or an estrangement from that child of yours? Thatīs never been the way of the King and Queen and they will hardly change this at their very advanced age!

All these photos were taken after Haakon and Mette-Marits engagement, which made her the official bride of the CP and future Crown Princess, or even after their wedding.
Haakon is known since 20 years by now as being very hands-on and tremendously affectionate with Marius, just like the King and Queen! There are dozends of other photos similar to these with the Crown Princess and her first son. Her "lioness-love" for Marius - as well as her children in general - is also known and well documented, so I donīt know what is in the subtext of your message when you claim these photos would show even more affection from the Crown Princeīs part towards Marius than from his mother? Apart from that photos are just snapshots, a situation of a second frozen in time.
I also donīt quite get your post when you say it would be "weird" for the 3 children (the Behn-girls?) for certain royal events when they will be getting older...?

Wise...? We can see, what happened. Something went very wrong in this family, and their future seems to be not better.

The King and Queen are the last to block a love between two consenting adults. They know out of very own, long, experience how it feels when a loved partner is not accepted by the King.

Yes, wise enough not to create a rift within the family and to accept adult childrenīs decisions with whom they want to spend their lives with! Where would in your opinion be the benefit if they would act like 18th, 19th centuries parents saying "if you donīt give up this person I will never see you again, your not my son/ daughter anymore....!" etc.?! The King and Queen are not that theatrically dramatic, itīs simply not in their DNA! A family feud is never a solution an act of wisdom. Of course, everyone is entitled to have an opinion. But it is a huge difference if you say "oh, are sure you do the right thing? Have you considered this and that? did you think of problem x or y ....?" and so on, or if you act like an autocrat, estranging your children from you!
ML could argue she has given up virtually everything, her income as a member of the RF, her title, and even then her new partner would be rejected. In that case I would feel treated very unfair, to put it mildly, myself, too!
No, Iīm happy there is a different atmosphere within the RF, despite all the troubles life may bring, than in the belgian or romanian royal families where some people donīt even seem to talk anymore....

"We can see, what happened" No, we canīt, because Mr. Behnīs suicide was not a result of the King and Queen giving permission of her daughter to marry him back then 17 years ago, but the result of his mental illness!
Having had a son-in-law suffering from mental illness could happen to everyone, not because things "go wrong" in a family and you know that!
The NRF was always been a very warm and caring-for-each-other one - but still this fate can hit you. I have heard from families where everything seemed to be just fine, lots of love and compassion, but still a son at some point later in live, meanwhile a family father and grandfather (not seperated nor divorced), daughter happily married, killed himself after years and years of struggling against the desease. There are 100s of examples such as this prooving your argument as completely invalid.

The Shaman is a controversial figure - if you have read the Durek and ML thread, then you will be aware of his ridiculous remarks that cancer is a psychological illness. And that’s just the start - he has also - with no shame - publicly declared how much he enjoys intimate moments with ML. I am well aware of the NRF’s warmth and closeness but to me it just was not a good idea for Durek to attend the service. I think he is a hindrance rather than a help to ML and I hope the family soon realise this. It looks like we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

With the greatest respect to ML I wonder if inviting Durek was the “easiest” option for the King and Queen to save ML being upset over it. Personally I don’t think their default position would have been to invite him, but if ML pushed it was it worth falling out over.
Now we know the tragic news of Ari’s death it seems even worse IMO

With their son and his family spending Christmas elsewhere, perhaps ML presented Durrek and herself and daughters as a package deal. They also wouldn't be the first parents to invite a significant other they might rather not be there to keep the peace.

Or perhaps they do like him personally despite everything.

Ari was originally going to be there and he was a controversial figure a week ago as well. Supposedly Durrek and Ari got on but many families would find that an uneasy arrangement but trying to be making plans to get a long for the sake of the kids.
