I read somewhere she was the only european Queen to be republican...

She wasn't republican, but at the end of her life she became very interested in communism, and in full cold war she made trips to Russia and China where she sympathized with the official leaders.

As Catherine explained above, Queen Elisabeth was the first royal to visit USSR at the time there was a major threat from communism (Red). She also visited China later on. At the time when having liberal ideas was really a threat, visiting communist countries really just put a label on her, that of the "Red Queen."
