The iconic hats are back,not crazy about the dress but Beatrix still loks so regal and impeccably turned out.

Soestdijk Palace is Princess Beatrix' birthplace. She lives next door at Drakensteyn estate, she purchased in 1959.

Soestdijk Palace no longer has a royal use since 2004 and is in need of a restoration. The palace is not so special but the location with fabulous woodlands and parks in densely populated central Netherlands is a true gem. It is a pity Beatrix' birthplace to be commercialized. Pfff.
 
The Soestdijk Palace must be filled with special memories for Beatrix.

Yes I had the same thoughts. The palace is nothing special indeed but the garden is nice and the building has pleasant memories for most people in The Netherlands.

It seems that they are planning to ruin much of the park for the commercialization / new constructions.

I suppose that is Sybilla Dekker next to the princess?

Yes, in hindsight it would be better, but the State provides the Royal Palace Amsterdam, Noordeinde Palace and Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, Het Oude Loo (mediaeval hunding lodge) and Het Loo Palace (museal destination) is at the disposal of the King when needed.

I can understand the State feeling: "What can we do with Soestdijk?" but at the same time the four (now three) sisters, absolutely ladies with cash at the bank or other wealthy folks King Willem-Alexander, Bernhard van Vollenhoven, Princess Mabel) apparently were not interested...

The commercialization is more about appartments on the terrain of the kazerne (barracks and garages) of the Koninklijke Marechaussee which have no use anymore (the concrete complex at the right side):

The idea is that the exploitation of the top-segment appartments at this fabulous location pay for the upkeep of Soestdijk Palace. The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a military police force which traditionally guards the royal residences. With no residence at Soestdijk Palace, their barracks, stables, garages, sports complex, etc. are empty. Oh yes, if money is an issue: when the King sells the royal domain De Horsten in the most densely populated and most expensive part of the Netherlands (The Hague/Wassenaar) he has plenty of funds to purchase Soestdijk back. Queen Juliana sold Soestdijk for 2,1 million Euro (!!!!) (4,2 million guilders in 1970). The worst real estate deal ever.

Why did she sell it? I presume it was the private property of the Queen rather that state owned.

In this period the current Act on the Financial Statute of the Royal House was arranged. Back then it seems the Queen "ate" her own wealth as not only the palaces but also staffing, pensions etc. were billed at her own wealth and the annual dotation by by the State did not cover it, for decades.

This resulted in a private person (the Queen) actually financing a proper workings of an office of state (the monarchy) with her own wealth. This was "undesireable" and at longer term "unsustainable". And that is why the Government came with the Act on the Financial Statute of the Royal House.

The absurdly low price for Soestdijk and its domains probably was part of a deal: in turn the Govermment would pay for restoration, upkeep and staffing as long as the royal family uses it as a residence. And indeed Juliana and Bernhard used it until their last breath in 2004.

Princess Beatrix lives at estate next door. She could have moved in, in 2004 (or in 2013, after her abdication). I am sure the State could have found an arrangement as in that period (before COVID) the State reported Budget Surplus, after Budget Surplus, after Budget Surplus.

How lovely that she is visiting Curacao again. It seems the Caribbean islands of the Kingdom have a special place in the hearts of our royal family (and the other way around - they might not like the Netherlands much but many of them do love the royals).
 
Canada almost had a Caribbean province once, and we regret that didn't go through. Isn't it hard for royals to avoid the appearance of being on vacation when they visit this part of the country?

No,they might not,and vice versa too.But the Princess,and most if not all the members of our RF,just love the Antilles!Most of the time their visits are private,like when they go for diving holidays.
 
Wonderful to to see Princess Beatrix visit to Curacao and hopefully the Kings mother got to enjoy the warm climate.
