Not her usual smile though, it's tinged with sadness. She obviously knew Christina's end was near.

The European Union Youth Orchestra is very dear to Princess Beatrix. From the very start she has been a lady patroness, as she saw in the orchestra, with promising youth from all over the EU, an embodiment of her ideals of European cooperation, harmony and unity.

In 1974 it was Sir Edward Heath, then the Prime Minister of the brand new EU-memberstate United Kingdom, which proposed the orchestra. The Netherlands applauded the British idea and offered the infrastructure and the organization of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to help. Maestro Claudio Abbado became the founding music director and in 1978 the inaugural concert was held in Amsterdam with Princess Beatrix as special guest of honour.

I am sure that it is in reference to the death of the princess' youngest sister only a week ago. So, it is no surprise that although princess Beatrix is present at this event (everyone would have understood had she cancelled), she is also clearly mourning her sister princess Christina. See also the comments above about the second-last event she attended - on the day before her sister's passing.

It is easier to rationalise if the deceased lived a long, full and happy life. When grieving you return to your daily life but the loss of a loved sister means memories pop into your head at the weirdest things.

Memories of shared experience or something so simple that you imagine what you would have been doing with her now she's no longer either you.

Sometimes it is a fleeting moment captured on a single frame in a set and sometimes the memories are regrets.

Whatever the way it happens, it will continue to happen for some time.

The Princess is often seen with a fan, the latest engagements. I like it. It has something, to see a lady with a clutch and a fan.
