Princess Laurentien is fluent in French: she has studied at the Lycée Français in Tokyo, Japan (when her father was the EU Ambassador there). So no any problem to have a conversation in Paris with her French hosts.

Prince Constantijn was a guest in the talk show Op1 on tuesday. He was invited to talk about TechLeap and about the investments and changes needed to help Start-Up companies.

Not shown in this clip was a question he received about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The presentors asked if he followed what was happening in the British RF. His answer: "from a very appropriate distance".
On a question of the presenter if he felt connected to what happening he answered: "In a way I feel connected but they have a very different position than mine in that family. They have all kinds of formal duties. Here we have chosen a different solution. Although I am inside the Royal House, we -my brother as well when he was alive- have to make our own income. And that is a very different solution. They seem to be more stuck between those two worlds. And good, they have made their choice. And I think it was also brave of them."

After that the program went to a clip from a documentary about the prince in 2019, where he says that he lives like anybody else and he is doing groceries in an Albert Heijn supermarket.

"Yes a little less glamourous" he commented after the clip was over.

When asked the prince repeats that he thinks it is a brave decision as prince Harry probably also doesn't yet know what he gets himself into."I think a lot of things will still happen to him, as we have seen [the last weeks]. He choses for himself and for his wife..." The presenter barged in and filled in the sentence: "choosing for your wife is always good" after which the Prince smiled.

I have always liked Constantijn. He has a good head on his shoulders, both literally and figurally.
And it shows in his comments.

It is interesting that princes in both the Netherlands and Belgium are apparently expected to follow the happenings in the British royal family (and indeed the arrangements of the three princes and their respective monarchies are largely incomparable). Vice versa, it is hard to believe that a talk show host or reporter would expect the Duke of Sussex to follow what is happening in the lives of Princes Laurent or Constantijn or even to recognize their names. Presumably, more interest in foreign royal houses exists in the Netherlands and Belgium than in Britain.

Well, didn't Constantijn and Laurentien live in London for several years? I am sure they were in regular touch with members of the BRF. The Queen and princess Beatrix know each other very well.

In my experience in general small countries tend to be more outward focussed than bigger ones - perhaps more by necessity than by choice. And the dominance of the English language makes the barrage of articles easy to use for our national press. They have an intern translate the article and they have new content for their website, running along with the media hype for clicks. It is hard to escape the Sussex-drama even if you wanted to. It pops up on top of all international and national news and entertainment websites.

But this kind of informality is new for the Dutch RF. Two decades ago they did not appear in news programs as guests. There were no small interviews here and there. Only formal interviews which would happen sporadically and where questions like these would not have been asked in a million years. It slowly started to change somewhere in the early 2000s, with Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven appearing in news programs every now and than due to his work for the National Safety Board.

I am not happy with this. Prince Constantijn, Princess Laurentien, the Duke of Parma, Prince Jaime, Prince Maurits, Prof. Pieter van Vollenhoven popping up here and there from the talkshow DWDD to the talkshow Op1 to the talkshow Jinek. And it has become normal that they answer questions while walking to the car, see Blauw Bloed or even Boulevard.

This was unthinkable, a decade ago. Now I hear: Prince Maurits in that talkshow tonight and I think *yawn*, let me watch the Australian Open. It is quite inflatory and the (necessary) distance to the Royal House as well the difference between royals and celebbies is fading.

Okay: the Duke of Parma and Prince Maurits are no members of the Royal House. But the King's brother commenting on current affairs is pretty tricky.

Poor prince Constantijn and especially count Claus-Casimir; he was asked about 'his daughters' and was clearly in doubt whether he should stress that he also had a son.

Other interesting information: Countess Eloise is currently in her final year of high school and apparently was planning to do a 'gap year' but right now it's unsure how that will work out.

And princess Beatrix needed some help to have Zoom up and running to be able to wish her eldest son a happy birthday last week.
