According to De Standaard it has been a difficult 6 months for the family: 'my wife Claire became very ill, a lingering disease. And on top of that she got Corona in March. Due to my ongoing problem with the government I was not entitled to health care'.

In the telephone conversation he adds that 'it is very heavy for us. I have to take good care of my wife now'.

The two conditions separately are already life threatening but in combination it even gets worse. 'It is because my wife's immune system is very weakened. But due to the good care of the specialists Marc van Ranst and Michel Lambert the Cornona virus has been beaten'. The 'lingering disease' is also improving: 'the ailment has been discovered at an early stage, now all we can do is to wait and hope.'

The prince himself has a heavy cough but he knows for sure that he has not been infected with Corona: 'I have very fragile lungs and asthma since I contracted a pneumonia in 2014. I always cough and belong to a group at risk, but he Corona test was negative for me'.

The prince can not say how somebody in the family could have contracted the virus: 'It is a mystery to us. We have followed the advice of virologists Van Ranst and Lambert to the letter. But apparently the virus gets everywhere it wants to go. We have to learn a lot about Corona to master it. The voice of science is important to stop the spreading of the virus. So small but so destructive, it is mind boggling.

The problems of Princess Claire caused some administrative issues as well. Part of Laurent's dotation has been withdrawn by the government. A side effect is that Laurent, his wife and their children are not entitled to use the health care system or to receive money back from an insurance company.

'It is correct, we are not allowed to use the health care system so we were in big trouble'. But there was help from an unexpected corner: 'The employees of my brother the king quickly discovered in what a scandalous situation we were. His cabinet helped us. I want to thank the staff of the king from the bottom of my heart'.

When princess Claire has recovered the prince wants to return to his work: 'with my company for reforestation and sustainability we are trying to make the desert fertile, by planting trees. But a second issue of the problems with the government is that these works were forced to come to a halt. I am talking to the responsible minister to come to a solution, but we have not come that far at the moment.

I didn't know Princess Claire was sick. I hope she recovers soon. I'm glad Prince Laurent had his brother's help at this difficult time.

Thanks Marengo,
She had a serious ilness before the Covid.
She recovered from Covid , I hope she will recover from the other medical problem. This explains why the Princess was not at the Church of Laken in February.

Thanks Marengo. I have always liked Claire and I am saddened to learn she has to live with a lingering disease and to fight Covid. I am glad her brother-in-law has helped her for the covering of her medical expenses. I wish the family all the best.

You are right. Although Laurent seems to avoid thanking his brother by focusing on the staff, it must have been the King himself who has at least approved the decision to look for a way to give Princess Claire medical coverage.

If Laurent's story is correct it should be a scandal. But as sometimes seems to be the case with the Prince he may have a coloured view of reality. How difficult can it be to insure a family at one of the insurance companies?

There had been rumours for several months (before the virus) that she was ill, but Nothing had ever been confirmed. Claire is very popular in Belgium and I think she deserves it.

How on earth can he not have access to health care? That's awful and morally wrong, no matter his own wrong choices.

So his suggestion is that the government retaliated against him for his impolitic actions and/or for pushing for repayment of his Libyan investments by interfering with the health care system to deny access to his family? Have there been any documented instances of the government behaving in such a way?

Best wishes to Princess Claire for her recovery.

I am sorry to learn that princess Claire is ill; but I have a hard time believing that all Laurent is telling is true. He typically has a very colored worldview that entitles him to much and everyone not going along is 'against him'.

I assume all Belgians can take insurance for health care; and he like all others needs to follow the rules (both Corona-related and in general; I don't know which one is at stake at his reforestation project).

I agree. To be honest, I wonder whether he issued this statement to influence the government into increasing his dotation, repaying his investments, and approving his business projects, since the insinuation could be that until that happens, his wealth and income will be too scant to cover his wife's medical expenses, and thus it will be the government's wrongdoing if he cannot afford to pay for the care she requires. I hope my concerns are misplaced.

It's hard to take Laurent seriously when he has a public rant at the Belgian government in such a manner. I'm not a fan of the way the government here in the UK have been handling the pandemic; but I'm not a royal who has a history of spouting nonsense and riling up the press! Either way I hope Claire makes a speedy recovery.

He is not ranting against the government response about the pandemic. On the contrary he praises the virologists that are in charge.

---
In Het Nieuwsblad Prince Laurent's solicitor - Mr. Laurent Arnauts - claims that 'due to gaps in the law around the dotation, prince Laurent but also princess Claire and their three children are not entitled to health care that every other Belgian is entitled to.

The prince 'paid himself blue' due to medical bills. He adds that 'the family is in a real emergency situation and is in grave danger'.

HLN wonders how the law around the dotations can be different for Laurent and for Astrid. Pss. Astrid is entitled to health care.

Of course it was Philippe himself the one who ordered it and I'm sure that if they need more healthcare help, he'll make sure they will be covered even if he has to come from his own funds.

I still remember how Philippe and Astrid were round the clock at the hospital when Laurent was so sick (unlike their parents, who couldn't cancel their "holidays" ¬¬), I'm absolutely sure they won't let him down in a matter as serious as this.

I kind of worry about Louise and the twins, both their parents are not that old but seem to be prone to respiratory diseases, so they might be sick more often than not, I hope things get better, although I'm sure the family would provide for them if something bad happens :(

Laurent's wife seems such a lovely, stoic and patient woman. I feel terrible for her and for their family in this situation.
