Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations: 2022

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I have seen an Instagram post recently: the Duchess of Kent in casual trousers and sneakers at some sort of local music encouragement event.

That was not a royal engagement, but a private one carried out by Katherine Kent, not HRH The Duchess of Kent.

I love the videos coming out today of Princess Charlotte keeping her brothers in line. Something tells me she's going to be a confident, no-nonsense woman - another Princess Anne :)

I had very low hopes for her attendance as she also did not attend the Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip.

Yes that's very true and I had forgotten that!

That sounds like fun!

She hasnt done engagements for some time so that's hardly surprisinng.
I don´t see what having done none engagements has to do with not taking part in being seen with once husband or socialising with the RF at official family events, such as weddings, funerals or jubilees...?! I´m not talking about taking part in state occasions. It occurs to me she did something similar Harry and MM did last year, but as a minor royal lady and hardly known outside the UK, nobody noticed or cared (don´t know if everyone in Britain knows people like the Gloucesters, Kents or Princess Alexandra...?!). Still, I don´t know positively if that is the case. Some years ago I think I read somewhere, with the consent of the Queen, she retired from her royal duties. Obviously she and the Duke also live pretty much seperate lives since many years. And obviously, too, she doesn´t seem to be too fond to be known as a Duchess as she always presents herself with this commoner-like, somewhat artificial name "Kath. Kent"...

In fairness, for people who are not used to being around a gaggle of restless, excited young children, it's probably more fun to watch from afar than sit near them. After all, Louis was annoying Charlotte and at one point, Charlotte seemed to be annoying Mia.

I was struck again by how close the Cambridge and Tindall families seem to be. And I will say it again, Kate has the patience of a saint.
I absolutely agree with you! Well, Prcss Anne´s children, but Zara even more so, always seemed very close to William and Harry. Perhaps she is regarded by them as the sister they never had? But the Duke of Cambridge also seems to go along with Mike Tindall tremendously well and when they meet at private sports events, not so much as parttakers, but rather spectators, they seem to have so much fun together. This sort of affection seems to go on now with their children as well.

Someone made this video of the kids (Cambridges, Tindals, and Savannah) during the pageant:

Oh well, I don't think it will be wise to put them together on the balcony. You'll never know what mayhem they'll create

And if I'm not mistaken we see Wolfie around 5.15; correct?

Wouldn’t surprise me. Those videos are priceless. She just nudged George on the balcony- and that’s it: correction made! She (temporarily) got Louis to stop waving at trooping and got his feet off her lap at the pageant.

Not only Kate. The Tindalls as well. Their children were as hyper as Louis if not even more.

Not going to lie....along with the noise it would have worn me down at some point.

Frankly I think that some of the children shouldn't have been there. Louis was clearly too young to behave properly...

Your line made me laugh I agree

Since having a 4 year old myself , I loved seeing all the children there , loved seeing Prince Charles being just a grand dad, thought Kate was blooming marvelous in her handling of her son, and everything that day . yes it was a long day for the little ones but what a day to be with your family.

.

From Mike’s podcast- I think he’d agree. He mentioned the kids being on a sugar high, it being a long time for them to be there- specifically mentioned his kids and Louis IIRC.

And said it was a great celebratory weekend.

Actually people in the UK do know about the Gloucesters, Kents and Princess Alexandra, it is newer royal watchers who do not know them.

The Duchess of Kent is a beautiful woman both inside and out, she was stunning on her wedding day and over came a great deal to marry.
There is a tendency in some quarters to lump the older members of the family as nobodies or has beens.

As another poster pointed out these are the people who in some cases gave up a private life and career to support the Queen. They saw it as their duty to her and the country. If you read about Katherine Kent or look at documentaries about her you would know how respected she is. I dont think we should comment on her relationship with her husband because we do not know.

I agree that they are maybe not as well known abroad because when they were doing the tours it was before internet and instant round the clock news but it does not make them any less royal or devoted to our Queen.

We should also remember that the Kents and the Gloucesters were close to succession to the throne before the Queen married and had a family of her own. They were grand children of a King just as the royal grandchildren of modern days are of the Queen.

I am afraid this is sore point with me I really get irritated when people assume because they are older they are nobodies or do not matter, they were on the balcony and the front row of the church because they have supported the queen during the last 70 years. They have never let her down.

My rant over with.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent are particularly well-known, because they presented the Wimbledon trophies for years. Anyone over 35 will remember the famous occasion in 1993, when the Duchess comforted the late Jana Novotna after she lost the final from being 4-1 up in the deciding set. Princess Alexandra and the Gloucesters aren't as well-known, but certainly everyone knows who they are.

Some of their children were also well-known at one time - Marina Ogilvy always used to be in the gossip pages, one way or another, and so did Lady Helen Windsor who was very glamorous when she was younger (and still is now!).

Louis did fine the majority of the time. He was active and wanting to move around but was friendly and listened to his mother for the most part.. Kate kept him occupied non-stop (William definitely had the easier job having nice calm chats with George) and when he stopped listening and got obnoxious she took him out.

I also noticed the two older cousins in the second row would pop in every so often and wind him up. There were a couple of times when Louis was sitting quietly until they got his attention. Again, something I think many kids that age would do when left to their own devices, but IMO the girls’ parents should have told them to settle down and let the younger children be.

Duc et Pair - do you a have a link to this event? It may have been in a private capacity, but I love seeing the Duchess of Kent, she is such a charming woman.

I read somewhere that the duke and duchess of Gloucester also attended but I didn't see any footage of them (but also hardly any of the York princesses and their families, so that doesn't say much).

More over, you might want to include Wolfie's full name. His surname is Mapelli Mozzi (just like his father); Woolf is his middle name.

I think it's on this page, just below the photo of Lili:

I love that she's wearing sneakers. I'm 40 years younger than her, and I will absolutely NOT wear anything except supremely comfortable shoes, so I understand why she chose them :)

I did see the Duchess of Gloucester at the pageant in a pic from Getty Images. Probably the Duke was there.

Don’t know whether this is the correct thread for this article but it refers to a question that was asked of Australia’s Governor General and his wife when attending the Jubilee celebrations in London.

After attending a Service of Thanksgiving, General Hurley was asked by waiting reporters about the possibility of Australia becoming a republic.
His said a “new discussion” would be had once the Queen's reign ended.
General Hurley also said the Queen had lots of “emotional support” from Australians but that could change when a new monarch ruled.

Not a particularly diplomatic response considering he was attending a Thanksgiving service for the Platinum Jubilee.
I am not saying it was not an honest answer but could have been presented more diplomatically.

All he did was state the position in Australia and one that has been made by numerous PMs since we had the referendum in 1999. The issue will be revisited when the Queen dies (although the current PM has appointed a 'deputy minister for the republic which suggests it is being discussed at government level in serious terms at the moment).

I still think it unseemly to discuss somebody dying which in effect is what he did. He could have said something like that is a discussion for the future.
I am not for one minute claiming he said something which was not accurate.

I know how feel if my family discuss who is getting what when I pop my clogs.

It is a commonly said comment down here - 'we will discuss it when the Queen dies' so nothing wrong to Aussies as it is where we are in this discussion. Poms don't understand that concept I suppose and see it as disrespectful but to Aussies it was perfectly fine as it was simply stating the views held by both sides of politics and the views that have been expressed for two decades now. He was asked a question and answered it and in light of the change of government to the very pro-republican Labor Party with the new 'deputy minister' it was a question he was always going to get and so he gave the largely official view.
