Queen Elizabeth as Monarch, Mother and Grandmother

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The more I've thought about this, the more I'm leaning towards the belief that HM, The Queen was greeting her son and being in Queen mode, it was never too young to start Charles off on the ways and means of protocol when out and about in public. He wasn't that much older than when he sat in a crowded Westminster Abbey and watched his mother being crowned Queen.

From what we've seen from private family pictures and videos that have made their way into the public domain, there were a lot of fun times as a family and a closeness that that most families share. One would only have to look at Charles' face as he presented the early years in the Diamond Jubilee presentation he put together to realize what fond memories he did have from growing up.

Was the Queen cold? I don't believe so. Was the Queen proper and dignified when in the public eye and in "Queen mode"? Most certainly.

When I first got interested in the BRF in my teens, I was under the impression that Her Majesty was distant, and had no clue how to show emotion. However, as I got older, and did more research, I realized just how wrong I was. It takes a very disciplined person to keep emotions in check, especially when the instinct tells one to do otherwise. I'm sure HM would have loved to giver her little son a hug, but she was in her 'work' mode, so she couldn't just switch it off. I'm sure in private she gave him all the hugs that she missed during her time away. I loved the images and footage we saw during Diamond Jubilee. They showed a family that loved being together, just like most families. The parents knew how to have fun, and the kids were happy. We also need to remember that every person needs to be loved in a different way, and sometimes a parent shows love in a way that doesn't meet the child's needs. It doesn't mean the child is not loved. It just means that both parties need to make some adjustments. Her Majesty, and Prince Philip did the best they could with what they were given. That's all anyone can ask.

:previous: Because travel was slow and liners leaving or arriving back was a big deal. It was an event in itself and let's be honest, long before she disembarked, Prince Charles like any boy of his age, was looking at a beautiful ship come in.

I'm not sure I understand your insistence that HM was a cold mother, and old family photos seem to say something different, but that's what this board is for.

He might have been looking at a ship but to say that was more important than his mother ! Yes we can disagree here.

I reproduce this, Page 691, 692 of Shawcross's biography of the Queen Mother, without comment, except to say that I believe the Queen and Prince Philip had parental attitudes which were prevalent in upperclass circles before the war, but were slowly changing by the 1950's. Charles was five and a half in mid 1954, Anne was nearly four.

'In early March 1954 the Queen wrote from Melbourne (she and Philip had been on an antipodean Commonwealth tour.) She expressed her excitement to her mother that she would see her children three weeks earlier than originally planned.

Britannia, the new royal yacht, was sailing to the Mediterranean to pick up the Queen and Prince Philip. The children (Charles and Anne) would be on board. Elizabeth was sure they would have changed a lot in the past six months; she was also concerned that they might not recognise their parents.

Her mother (who had been looking after them) reassured her, with a gentle hint that it was important to try to remember what it was like to be five or six years old. 'One really felt deeply about things and you may find Charles much older in a very endearing way. He is intensely affectionate and loves you and Philip most tenderly- I am sure that he will always be a very loving and enjoyable child to you both.'

The reunion finally took place in Tobruk, on board the Britannia. 'The children are enchanting and it is so wonderful to be with them again,' wrote Elizabeth to her mother.

When she and Philip came aboard both children 'gravely offered us their hands....partly I suppose because they were somewhat overcome by the fact that we were really there and partly because they have met so many new people recently! However, the ice broke very quickly and we have been subjected to a very energetic routine and innumerable questions which have left us gasping!'

The Queen with her children and grandchildren. There are also many pictures of her with Charles, but I didn't find them.

ROYAL NORWAY, thank you for posting all the pictures and clips. I think my favorite ones are from Harry's Christening, and from Balmoral, where Her Majesty is keeping Eugenie company as the older kids go riding. Very loving grandmother, who enjoys her grandkids. It's not hard to believe that she was a loving parent to her children when they were young, especially after those clips.

And another thanks from me, ROYAL NORWAY, for your hard work in posting all these great photos and videos. I think they prove the speculation that HM wasn't a good mother to her children when they were small wrong. :) As someone else said upthread, at the time "children were seen and not heard". Aristocratic and royal children also rarely saw their parents. Some children only saw their parents for an hour a day before dinner and they spent the rest of their life with their nanny/governess and then at boarding school before they became an adult and could fend for themselves.

Case in point - Robert Hardy. He very much had that childhood- his parents loved him, but he says it wasn't the kind of love he needed. But he says it taught him how to treat his own children, and I don't think he'd have quite the same lovely way with children. So big lemonade of lemons.

I do want to make a comment here about something that has struck me quite a few times in the past couple days. Its when someone like Royal Norway goes out of her way to collect and put together such an array of photos and video clips of HM as a young mother, we realize what a special place we have here. Along with a fantastic staff and moderators who keep things in very good order, we have a very unique group of people coming together to discuss various points of royal life in a calm, dignified (although sometimes silly) manner. Its what makes TRF a success and the whole bunch of us a little wiser than when we woke up this morning.

Anyways, back to the Queen. Bit by bit we get glimpses into the life and memories of a monarch with a very long reign behind her but we also start to realize how much she treasures her down time with her family. She has perfected the "Queen mode" and its no wonder that the majority could believe that persona carried over into her private life. No wonder she loves to retreat to Balmoral and have BBQs and do the dishes and walk the dogs and various little things we take for granted.

Thanks for posting all those wonderful insights Royal Norway. :flowers:

Yes, very true, and speaking for myself- I found a group of friends who love and support me unconditionally, and aren't afraid to listen to hard stuff. Sometimes the only place I can turn at 2 in the morning for an ear. My parents are always willing to stay up and talk, but hey, sometimes they need to crash. And sometimes a girl needs her friends more than a parent lecture- even if they don't intend to lecture. And sometimes it's hard to talk when you want to, but the parent is the one buggin you. I know I have the best parents in the world, and it happens rarely, but of course it happens, and at those times Daria and Osipi help it all make sense. And I willingly do that for my friends. . When I say to Mom, at a late night hour, " Daria needs to talk.." That's code for long night- and Mom and I both do it willingly. This has been brought home to me over the last fee days, and as much as I love the Royal stuff, what really matters to me -.what I really come on for. Back to HM...

I've always loved that clip of the Queen and Beatrice at Balmoral when Beatrice was, literally, about to throw a Right Royal Temper Tantrum because she couldn't follow Zara and Harry down the Bridle Path. Help various PMs in the Commonwealth to see eye to eye, not that impossible. Bring together most of the Reigning Heads of the World, especially the Arab Monarchs, to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in hopes of opening up new communications between them all, difficult, but doable.

Keeping a three year old from going into full out Temper Tantrum Toddler Monster Mode? Now *that's* diplomacy!! :D

Thanks ROYAL NORWAY for the Pictures and clips. Amazing how you can see certain people as Babies and you know who it is right away. Harry's one of those to me, as IMO, he really hasn't changed that much.

Looking at his Christening though, whenever I hear about how fragile the Gown is now, I think back to how lucky they were back then. It's not in that video, but he sure gave pulling the lace apart a pretty good try in other ones I've seen. :D

Ditto :D. This is one special place. No matter what our opinions are, we can always count on this little corner of the web for a good discussion, and learning. Like you, I loved seeing the clips of Her Majesty during her down time. She has perfected, and polished her work persona, so to see 'her' is a rare treat.

I came here originally because I was getting tired of Alexander Palace Time Machine. It concentrated mostly on the Romanovs, and I was kinda over that whole hoopla. I mean there are only so many pictures you can look at without feeling depressed for that family, but that's not for this thread. Anyway, I was so glad to discover that I could talk about so much more than royal stuff, and I wasn't expecting to make friends, but am so glad that I did. Royalty is awesome, but being able to talk about stuff that matters outside of these threads is a true gift that I got from this website.

Oh, you said it! Her Majesty handled that situation like a pro. There was no yelling or arguing, just knowing when to pick one's battles. I'm sure of little Beatrice wanted to go by herself, there would have been a firm 'not a good idea', but she just cared about doing what the 'big kids' we're doing, and having Granny there didn't matter. I do think that 'Granny' was thinking that dealing with politicians, and other heads of state was a breeze compared to keeping her little granddaughter from losing her temper. She did a fabulous job.

IMO, Andrew insisting on a very large, older than was usual, Eugenie being crammed into the historic christening gown didn't do it any good at all, either. Everyone looked very cheerful at Harry's christening, with an ebullient little William rushing about.

I do think the Queen especially enjoyed being a grandmother, especially at
places like Balmoral and Sandringham, where there were lots of enjoyable country things to do, like horse riding.

I have to disagree about Harry. I think Harry's looks have changed considerably, really. He had quite elfin looks until his mid-teens and then at Eton his looks changed again. It wasn't until his very early twenties that Harry began to fill out and resemble the man we know today.

Come to think of it, so did the Queen Mum. Another thought has occurred to me that may be very possible on how circumstances were back then. As a newly crowned monarch, HM did have to go on tours and away from her children for periods of time and IIRC, I believe they were left in the care of the Queen Mum. Perhaps this was just what the doctors ordered as I can imagine the death of her husband at such a relatively young age had a tremendous impact on QEQM and she felt the loss deeply. Keeping one foot in front of the other and taking care of her two young grandchildren may have given her that important reason we all need to get out of bed in the morning sometimes and made it easier to deal with her grief. As close as we know Charles was to his grandmother, I'd bet my last gumdrop that the deep and lasting bond between them was forged in that time period.

Then again, I could be so far out of the box that I'd have a totally different mailing address. Just thoughts.

^ I think the Queen Mother was the one who taught Charles fly fishing.

I doubt the Queen mother was any more hands on with her grandchildren than her daughter was JMO. That should keep everyone busy with quotes and photos to prove me wrong but it's MO

I kinda of agree. I don't think QEQM was doing the hands on taking care of Anne and Charles when the Queen was gone. They had nannies. Edward and Andrew had nannies. David and Sarah even had a nanny.

It depends what you mean by 'hands-on'. I think the Queen Mother listened to her grandchildren and encouraged them.

I don't think she rolled around on the floor with them, no, but she did enjoy outings with them. While the Queen was in India, the Queen Mother and Charles enjoyed the noise and excitement of Andrew's first birthday party at Buckingham Palace.

In my post #153 I quote her writing to her daughter about Charles and in one letter she tells her daughter when she's away that the children (Charles and Anne) are enjoying playing a card game with her in the evenings called Dumb Crambo, which involved acting and rhymes.

She took them to Shaw Farm, where the children turned on taps, climbed rickety hay bales, inspected farm machinery, fed cows and pigs and patted a baby in a pram!

When I referred to hands on, I meant put your hands on the child to clean it,wipe up the spit and boogies, feeding it, change a diaper or trying to wake it up and get it dressed in the morning or go to bed at night.

They sort of things that our grandmum did went our parents dumped the kid with grandmum because they wanted a night away ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaCJ4xTfpx0 this might be slightly off topic but i love this video showing the Queen Mother returning from a 5 week tour of America and Canada. It shows the warmth between her and the Queen and the affection Anne and Charles have for her and she for them. I guess as the Queen had her new role to get o grips with it was inevitable the children would have to be, in part, looked after by others and so, if thats the case, who better than their grandmother. Part of me wishes they still did formal welcome homes like this now.

Thanks Tommy. Prince Charles' facial expressions are so incredible on meeting that gaurd, how little changes.

The Queen Mother bent down to greet her grandchildren and give them a hug when meeting Charles and Anne after she'd been away.

No, by one definition the Queen Mother wasn't a 'hands on' grandmother, as she didn't change nappies etc, (that period only lasts for a short while, anyway) but what she did do was give understanding and love and was demonstrative with her affection. It's clear her grandchildren loved being with her and that too makes for a fine grandparent.

My adult children have just lost my mother in law, their grandmother. In their eulogy at her funeral, they didn't speak of her practical care, (she never changed any of their nappies and was a dreadful cook.) They did however, speak of her inspirational qualities, her unconventionality and sense of fun, and that's what they remembered.

It is quite a contrast to how the Queen greeted them. Charles and Anne's childhood was much different to Andrew and Edward's though due to the Queen being much more comfortable in her role as Queen. Even Andrew has said how different their childhood was in comparison which is a real shame but it's sadly just the way it was. Andrew and Edward were the Queen's "family", whereas perhaps Charles and Anne (with Charles in particular) were born to secure the line of succession. Who was to know the Queen would go on to have two more boys, but at the time Anne was the 2nd in line to the throne and thus was quite important.

Charles and Anne did have a good childhood though - there is no arguing that. There are plenty of videos of them enjoying holidays and time with their parents. They were extremely close as a children though and still are today.
