Märtha Louise finally returned home to Norway in 1999 to resume her royal duties while still persuing her equestrian dreams.

In August, on the first day, of a three-day visit to Scotland, Märtha Louise attended the Norwegian folk costume exhibition, part of the “Crown of Roses” Exposition, an exhibition of European tradional costumes held at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh. On the second day, she went sightseeing in the city. On the third day, Märtha Louise attended "Norway Sunday" at the International bookfair to promote children literacy programs.

In December 1999, Märtha Louise went on a week long tour in southeast Asia. In Singapore, she visited a children's hospital and a Norwegian's Seaman's Church. She also paid a courtesy call on the president of Singapore and met with representatives of Norway's business community. In Bangkok, she donated a $125,000 grant on behalf of the Norwegian government to a day-care center for needy children and she opened a new Jotun factory. She also opened an SOS children's village in Viet Tri, Vietnam.

1. to 5. October 9, 1999: Oslo Horse Show Charity Performance at the Oslo Spektrum : The king was played by Lars Rasmussen. The Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise played the Princess in the play "Prinsessen Vil Ikke". The play was about the Princess, whom did not want to marry the man the father recommended. In the real play the Princess kissed a frog, which turned into a lovely Prince and they lived happily ever after. Princess Märtha Louise this time chose the frog instead of the Prince when she participated in the costume show at Oslo Horse Show Saturday October 9th. The frog Esben Johannessen was the lucky person and accepted the surprisingly real kiss during the play "Prinsessen Vil ikke". (by Alloverpress)

Märtha Louise attended the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games with her horse "Lenaro" who was competing in the games for New Zealand. He was ridden by Bruce Goodin who was rumoured to be Märtha Louise's new boyfriend. While attending a morning press conference, Märtha Louise addressed the latest press coverage of Haakon's and Mette-Marit's romance. She defended her brother's choice of girlfriend then she added, "I hope you give her the time she needs to adapt to the role of a princess. It's not easy, and I know that from first hand experience."

In October, she joined Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, President Grimsson of Icleland and Princess Benedikte of Denmark at the dedication ceremony of Scandinavia House on Park Avenue in New York. They were later joined by special guest of honour, Victor Borge for the dedication of Borge Hall in Scandinavia House.
