The Queen has been pleased to give her formal approval to the appointment of His Royal Highness The Duke of York as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. The Duke of York takes over the appointment from The Duke of Edinburgh, who has been Colonel of the Grenadier Guards since 1975.

I had been wondering if Phillip would now retire from this appointment. Does this mean that Andrew will now undertake a more formal and active role at the Trooping of the Color?

It should see Andrew wearing uniform and riding rather than sitting in the carriage with his daughters.

I am delighted with this as it is long overdue that the Queen's second son is able to take his place in this event. I suspect he may even take the parade practice for the first time next year.

I also suspect, now, that Harry will end up taking over the Duke of Kent's colonecy when he retires or maybe they will move Anne to that and allow Harry to take over the Blues and Royals as he served in that regiment.

The reason Andrew sits in a carriage, like Edward, is because he wasn't a colonel of a household division. Both are colonels, but only those of household regiments ride in Trooping of the color. He is colonel of the royal irish and Yorkshire regiments.

The Grenadiers are a regiment of the household division, which means Andrew is now entitled to ride in uniform with Charles, William and Anne. It will be nice hopefully to see him do so in June.

I also suspect, now, that Harry will end up taking over the Duke of Kent's colonecy when he retires or maybe they will move Anne to that and allow Harry to take over the Blues and Royals as he served in that regiment.

Philip is also colonel of the queen's hussars, which may be intended for Harry (appointed near wedding). There is also a new regiment that hasn't been appointed a colonel. Seems more like likely IMO that Harry will be given one of these then have the Duke of Kent retire for him.

I am so happy for HRH. I never liked seeing him sit in the carriages, especially since he is one of the royals who has served during a time of war. I think this also has to do with the fact that Prince Harry is engaged, which could make the carriage seating chart a little tight. Once Prince George starts sitting in a carriage, which could be in 3-4 years, Harry and Meghan will most likely move back a carriage, sitting with the York Princesses, now that there are two available seats in the carriages.
