The Princess Royal is at the BBC Sports Personality of the year awards, in her capacity as the patron of the Scottish RFU, to present Doddie Weir OBE with the Helen Rollanson Award.

The Princess Royal also has a more personal connection to Doddie in that HRH is patron of the motor neurone disease. A disease that Doddie was diagnosed with in 2016, he was told he had 1-3 years left to live and the next time he visited the Doctor he would not be walking. He walked on to the stage this evening, and he is about to celebrate Christmas with his family. Through his charity he has raised over £5 million to find a cure.
