PEDRO ALMODOVAR, 2006 PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARD FOR ARTS
Pedro Almodovar has been given the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award for Arts. The Jury for the Award announced its decision today in Oviedo.

His work, rooted in a Spanish society which was opening itself to profound changes, has acquired a universal dimension through original language with great expressive richness, able to summarize human complexities.

The Jury for the award -convened by the Prince of Asturias Foundation- was chaired by José Lladó y Fernández-Urrutia, and comprised of José Luis Álvarez, Fernando Argenta, Juan Cruz, Fernando Delgado, Isabel Falabella, Jorge Fernández Bustillo, José Luis Garci, Guillermo García-Alcalde, Jordi García Candau, Rosina Gómez-Baeza, Luis Hernando, Carlos Madera, Miguel Muñiz, Benigno Pendás García, Juan Ramón Pérez las Clotas, Rodrigo Uría Meruéndano, Amelia Valcárcel, José Velasco y José Antonio Caicoya (secretary).

Pedro Almodovar, one of Spain's most internationally acclaimed filmmakers, was born in Calzada de Calatrava, Ciudad Real in 1951. He moved to Madrid in 1967, where he found sporadic work as an actor. After passing a State examination to become a civil servant, he joined Spain's National Telephone Company as a clerk, combining his work with his cinema pursuits. He made a number of short films between 1974 and 1978 and also spent the seventies involved in the theatre, music and writing for reviews. He made his first feature film, Pepi, Luci, Bom in 1980. The film was not only controversial and provocative but also a success, which enabled him to leave his job in the telephone company to work full-time in the cinema. In 1985 he launched a production company called El deseo with his brother Agustín, and has since produced his own and other directors' films.

I think the awards won't change the name. Infanta Leonor when becoming Princess will have her name in other initiatives but these awards will always be Prince of Asturias Awards.

Like in the example of Princess Sofia Awards. And I think it is so tender that these initiatives keep the name of the menthor.
