Their Majesties the King and Queen’s State Visit to the Republic of Cuba

The Directorate General of Diplomatic Communication and Information has announced the following:

Their Majesties the King and Queen will make a State Visit to the Republic of Cuba from 12 to 14 November

This State Visit is part of the events commemorating the V Centenary of the foundation of the city of Havana and will enable for the excellent and intense bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Cuba to be reflected upon at the highest level.

In the end the state visit will always take place. I don't know if it was the right time for this visit.

There is a lot of polemic about this state visit in Spain, it could be interpreted as a support to the dictatorship if there is no encounter with the opposition. Human Rights Watchers critizise the trip because there is no transition to democracy in sight and people are being suppressed.

The date has also generated criticism as the Head of State will leave the country on November 11, the day after the general elections to be held in Spain on November 10, and whose result will most likely be uncertain and point to a new political blockade, in addition to the ongoing separatist violence in Catalonia.
The date of the 500 anniversary of the foundation of Havana will be celebrated on November 16, but the Kings will go a few days before not to coincide with other guests of the Cuban regime, such as the dictators of Venezuela or the Nicaragua.

I don't understand why Sanchez didn't decide to cancel this trip.
Sanchez has acted badly on a number of issues, such as Catalonia, and is now damaging the image of the Kings and Monarchy by not canceling this trip, which is still on top of the election. Anyway ...

It is odd that the King will be in Cuba when he should be meeting with political parties leaders to decide on his proposed PM candidate following the November 10 election.

The timing of the State Visit is most unfortunate given the political situation in Spain.

One is surprised to see one of USA supine allies visiting Cuba.

They have a similar history with Cuba as with other south american countries.
I doubt they will do anything on this trip what would upset any allies, like meeting with any dictators.

i love that dress on letizia and she has arms to die for that this dress showcases, but it really isn't appropriate wear for a state visit not to cover your arms and shoulders.

Perfectly dressed for a tropical country, hot and humid, all year around. The Communist country is not a place to dress up. The King and Queen were summoned to go by the Socialist Party and... they were not allow to visit the dissidents. This is a trip for the celebration of the 500 years of the foundation of Havana, Cuba’s capital.
Notice that King Felipe changed to a “guayabera” a linen dress shirt used by Cuban men. Poor Felipe must have been dying of heat with his suit.

Why?? Many of the US allies do trade and visit Cuba. Actually the only country in recent years that has supported the embargo is Israel. It may come as a surprise, but US relations with Cuba don't dictate other countries.

Royals make these trips on the request of their government. They certainly visit other countries with questionable leadership. China and Saudi Arabia among others.

Back to the actual tour:

Photos are bringing back memories for me. I went to school further east in Santiago, but we stayed in Havanna for a few days on the way in and out. It was my first experience outside Canada/USA and will always hold memories.

I have been to the church and remember streets just like that.

The night of the day 1 King Felipe with Queen Letizia visit the exhibition "Cuba-Spain 500 years, with you in the distance".

Attended a Ballet Gala by the National Ballet of Cuba, the Carlos Acosta Company, the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba and the Lizt Alfonso Company

Lovely pictures! They were walking hand in hand! Very romantic... :)

Such a magnificent couple. They do such a wonderful job representing Spain.

I didn't realize that King Felipe was the 1st Spanish Monarch to visit the former Spanish colony since Independence.

It's great to see that 15 years later Felipe and Letizia are still like a newly married couple - it's the same with Frederik and Mary of Denmark for me. Always lovely to see the royal couples display their affection for one another in public.

Enjoying watching this tour. Bringing back fond memories.

The couple seem to be enjoying it, and each other. :flowers:
