The presence of the Princes of Asturias and especially the one of Doña Letizia in the swearing-in ceremony of Aníbal Cavaco Silva as President of the Republic of Portugal were followed with an enormous expectancy by the Luso guests and media, who dedicated most of their publications to flatter the Princes. It was however Doña Letizia, the one who took to the greater number of applauses and compliments, being even described by the Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas as the star of the ceremony.
After ten years of mandate, the Socialist Jorge Sampaio, a good friend of Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía and a Head of State of much integrity and respect was personally thanked by Don Felipe for the affection he has always showed towards the Spanish Royal Family.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the 66-year-old economist that was elected as the new Portuguese President last January, is the following man to arrive in the scene. The Princes of Asturias attended the first ceremony of Cavaco as president of the Republic (in which he imposed the Great Necklace of the Order of the Freedom to his predecessor, Jorge Sampaio) and they occupied seat an outstanding place in the presidential table, during the lunch that the new President offered to his guests, in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Queluz.
