Rajoy and Co. are super thankful, you can bet. Basically that statement was the main news about the visit everywhere in the media here.
Let's hope the Government will have the finesse to send some bottle of good old Rioja to Obama in appreciation

I think there is something to be said for staying true to one's style. Letizia is-and has always been-modern, independent, and very beautiful.
In other words she is not a particularly regal queen because "regal" isn't her style. Maxima does regal very well and very naturally. It suits her, imo. And she has the height, presence and personality to carry it off.
At least Letizia doesn't try hard to be someone she is not, unlike a couple of other Royal spouses that come immediately to mind.
ETA: I do wish Letizia had kept her bare hands off rare historical artifacts. Everyone knows that natural body oils can be damaging to fragile paper in books. I would have expected her to know better. Any other tourist would have been invited to leave Mount Vernon asap for doing that.

Can we move on from comparing Queen Letizia to other royals as it has become so tedious and repetitive, several of these posts and replies have been deleted as will any further ones.
Thanking you all!

Kind Felipe did beautifully with our president in the White House meeting from my viewing of the video posted. I would even say he spoke better than the president, without hesitation. He is also perfectly bilingual, which our president is not, though I could tell Obama could understand some of the Spanish translation.
If all Spanish speakers spoke as clearly and slowly as the translator, I would be able to also!
Another day in the USA of no coverage of this visit. I predict they will get huge local coverage in Florida which may spill over to national news as Hispanic news. They are getting Spanish cable TV coverage

Besides being a part of this forum, i have not heard anything about this trip in my neck of the woods, of course yesterday we did get the rare occurrence of rain so that took up all the headlines

As everyone knows Southern California has an enormous Spanish speaking population but except for Telemundo, the visit of the Spanish Royals is being virtually ignored here .

Even experts touch rare books with their bare hands. Perhaps we can rest the issue now.

I believe King Felipe VI lived in the US before while he was studying for his master's degree at Georgetown University. Of course, he was already fluent in English by then and probably had learned English as a child. His Majesty also speaks French and Catalan, in addition to Spanish and English.

^^^From what I've read Sofia spoke to her children in English to help them with their fluency.

I haven't been on this forum for a few days or I would have known the King and Queen of Spain were in the U.S. I had no idea they have been here for several days. Not that I'm surprised. The media in the States care little to nothing about any royals who aren't British. So, I'm glad I discovered this forum to get info that no other media wants to report.

My Yahoo news feed had something about it yesterday. But that disappeared later in the day. Few of my friends can name 4/10 top of the line of succession or the UK. And I doubt any of them even know what other monarchies exist in Europe (much less elsewhere). Tiaras and dresses may be on the radar in my neck of the woods, but monarchies are not.

I attended some of the events at the 450th Anniversary and birthday of St. Augustine as I live within driving distance of the city. I look forward to hearing about the King and Queen's trip to St. Augustine. It's too bad that they weren't able to attend the events of the 450th birthday itself.

I don't doubt she would have been thoughtful about touching something valuable and historic.
