Carlota, that is the usual protocol of the White House.
In the example of the visit of Willem Alexander and Maxima as Crown Princes, they were officially invited by the First Lady, and the President only visited as a gesture.
During their visit as King and Queen, Michelle Obama was not at the meeting, so Maxima was there, because she was alone. In that case either they were with the foreign ministers and ambassadors of the respective countries, as in the Spanish case.
Queen Letizia and First Lady also has a common cause on the issue of good nutrition, so they had a theme of their own debate.
Duke, they should have a interesnte debate because, like at their meeting in New York, the meeting was longer than scheduled.

The pictures carlota is referring to are from June 2015, WA & Max were Kings already, I think they were on an official visit, just like F&L.

Now... those pics with Letizia and Michelle really make me chuckle! They come off as funny and the two women seem sycronised in the moves

There are very close ties between Spain and the US. The spanish King and the President probably had more serious business to discuss than was the case when the Dutch King and Queen visited. Looking at the photos the meeting between the Dutch royal couple and the Presidential couple it appeared more of a social event than a business meeting.
Neither Queen would be attending a serious meeting between two heads of state. The governmental ministers travelling with the royals at these state visits would be the ones accompanying the King.

I'm sure Letitizia asked if she could touch the book w/out gloves. She's been to many events like this over the years and I'm sure she knows the protocols. If it wasn't fine, she wouldn't have done it. :)

This is the first I've heard of their visit, no coverage except a brief mention by the Washington post. I imagine the press in Florida will give them a lot.
Anyone else in U.S. Seen any press on them?

Not here in the southeast. This is the first I heard they were visiting as well. No mention on the websites for the local tv news or the newspapers.

Maybe the difference is only so striking because The POTUS is such a great and exceptional speaker, seeing Obama talking calmly and summarizing the meeting without any effort and immediately after seeing Felipe reading from his card, almost stumbling through his words and trying to play down his nervousnes with some empty gestures, its like professor and first day pupil.

Obama expresses deep commitment to “strong, unified Spain”
The US president did not specifically mention Catalonia in his address, and later avoided EL PAIS’ questions on whether he and the Spanish monarch had discussed the issue during their nearly hour-long meeting.
But his mention of a “strong and unified Spain” satisfies the Spanish government’s desire for more explicit support from its allies with regard to the possibility of secession by the northeastern region. Earlier this month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister David Cameron publicly expressed similar support.

I wonder if there was any reaction in Spain to Obama"s indirect statement against Catalan independence.
