King Felipe VI and Government formations

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
why he can't go on holiday
Technically, there is no need for him to stay in Madrid since he has no part in the formation of a government once a candidate is officially designated (Rajoy) and until, after he's voted at the Congress, he need to swear the charge in front of the King (Felipe could go away and return back for the swearing).

But for PR reasons it makes all the sense. It wouldn't look good if the King would go away on holidays while the situation is so unclear. Simple as that.

Should King Felipe VI follow the example of Albert II in Belgium and take a more proactive role now to try to avoid a third election ? Or is the position of the monarchy in Spain too fragile for the King to serve as an effective mediator between the different political parties ?

The PP/Ciudadanos/Coalición Canaria group is only six votes short of an overall majority. It doesn't seem reasonable that a new election should be held. Quite frankly, the leftist and nationalist parties are just playing (bad) politics.

Spain's king coaxes politicians to end 9-month gov't limbo | Daily Mail Online

Felipe said he will not call the political leaders for consultation, but to give them time to discuss (as he already did after Sanchez' failed investiture). He also asked for dialogue and compromise.

Without an agreement between the political leaders until October 31st, Felipe is going to call new election on Christmas day.

Felipe will strictly follow his role according to the constitution what is a mediator but not to take active role in forming a government.

Hopefully there will be some good news, not sure if a 3rd election will change anything.

Socialist Party (PSOE) has just voted to abstain on Rajoy investidure so he can govern in minority.

This most likely means the King will appoint Rajoy as candidate after his round of consultations this week and he will be probably elected in one-two weeks, just at the end of the term that forces to call for new elections.

Spain's Socialists vote to allow Rajoy minority government - BBC News

The bright side is we won't have to vote (third time in a year) on Christmas Day (!!!!!), and obviously that there will be a government at last. The worst part is everything else, IMO of course

That was the wisest thing to do for PSOE (Labour). Polls showed that new elections would only benefit PP (Conservatives) again and hold the risk that Podemos will bypass the PSOE as the largest party on the left.

:previous: Yes, indeed. But the outcome is not a good one for them either. I'm afraid they have just given the leadership of the left to Ps. They are going through the same road that PASOK in Greece. It was a lose-lose situation for them if there ever was one.

The only thing they have won is a four-year term to rebuild themselves and recover their voters, because new elections in December would have been a complete debacle for them. Much better to stay with the number of seats they already have.

Well that's some good news and hopefully Spain will have a new government soon and not another election.

Same in Germany with the SPD. They have been in decline for years, I am sure it will be the same for PSOE, their members/voters will leave and other parties will benefit. This is the end of the 2 party system as Spain has known it.
