btw, "The World Reacts" headline was regarding the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, I actually cropped the original screen cap to include just the image of King Abdullah, just thought I'd clarify that.

Abdullah calls for zero tolerance against extremism

NEW YORK — Jordan’s King Abdullah called for "zero tolerance” against extremism and said his kingdom is working to promote moderate Islam across the globe.

"Jordan has worked with the international Muslim community to oppose extremists’ interpretations of Islam,” he told the UN General Assembly on Friday.

"Jordan wants true, moderate and traditional Islam everywhere in the world,” said Abdullah.

A critical step for peace in Jordan, the Middle East and the rest of the world "is to ensure zero tolerance towards those who promote extremism,” he said.

The king made his address in English and his wife, Queen Rania, sat in the assembly hall, applauding after the speech.

Abdullah noted that Jordan has taken a leading role in promoting moderate Islam, holding conferences in the kingdom to differentiate between Islam and extremism.

He said Amman hosted more than 180 Muslim scholars in July. At that meeting, the Muslim world’s top scholars from over 40 countries agreed that fatwas, or religious edicts, should only be issued by clerics with religious authority.

In 2004, Jordan launched an initiative urging Muslims to reject extremism.

amina1, i would have to say that the current king visits the us so much is precisely because King Hussein himself visited the us frequently. since it's creation, jordan has attempted to forge close ties with the west, be it britain or the united states. whether that has actually benefited jordanians is arguable. i don't really know what side to stand on. but i think the current king is just continuing a long-standing tradition.

Just wondering, did he visit or meet with any Imams in mosques during his visit?:) great pictures, Alicky.;)
