Thanks for the information, I look forward to seeing some pictures and links on this visit.
I think Rania and Abdullah go down well in the States, the Americans love them, especially Rania.

I think actually that most americans have no idea who either Abdullah or Rania are. A very select group of people know and yes, most of these people adore Abdullah and Rania (for either political or fashion reasons) and some of these people dislike Abdullah (for political reasons).

Perhaps I should clarify my statement Madonna, which seemed to imply that they are well known in America.
Rania and Abdullah have been interviewed by many big name people in the States during their various visits. Rania has also done Larrry King, Oprah (twice), appeared on the cover of Time, Newsweek (?), People, Forbes, Vanity Fair.
Whilst I don't think they are household names or anything like that to the vast majority of Americans, to a certain sector of the American public - "upper class" (its the best word I can think of), better educated, political, high earning, I think they would be recognized and those sort of people would be interested in reading about them and they do appear to be admired (generally).
I stick by my point that Rania and Abdullah go down well in the States with the people they NEED to go down well with, she trades on her beauty (and Americans love a pretty face) and then get surprised when she has a brain to back it up with and Abdullah seems a breath of fresh air with his more modern views on muslim/western relations.
But you are right that to the general American public, I doubt they would know who they are.

Snowwhite,I like the vision very simpliste about Americans and why they like KA and QR, as you resumed that on some superficial things like beauty, elegance and some shows...
I totally agree with Madonna that Americans don't know either who are really KA or Rania, this doesn't mean they don't know who they are if they see them featured in some medias, but they don't know who they are really a part a very very select group who is aware about reality of things in both Middle East and USA.

While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion of Abdullah and Rania, it should be noted that 1) this thread is about their visit to the USA and not what Americans think about them and 2) it goes without saying that you can not generalize what people think. Unless anyone on this board has done a poll or spoken with a diverse group of Americans...this whole conversation is pretty moot.
Let's get back on topic.

According to a poll by Harris Interactive (Online interviews with 3,685 American adults, conducted from Aug. 8 to Aug. 17, 2006) King Abdullah got a rating of 44, the second highest (after the Israeli prime minister) among eight ME leaders and entities surveyed:

And Salman Ahmed is addressing the panel too. That should be interesting!
I wonder what the article means by "the dates of the three-day event to be held in New York were not disclosed."
I've known the dates (Sept 20-22) for quite a while now.

Queen Rania addresses UNICEF symposium on MDG
New York, 18 Sept. (Petra)-- At the turn of the century, world leaders came together to outline the most pressing needs and obstacles to be addressed and set a deadline for tackling them. They called these the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the deadline for achieving them is 2015. As we approach 2015, many countries are on track to meet those deadlines, but most underdeveloped nations still have a long way to go.
Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, on Monday spoke at the Child Survival Symposium about the importance of MDG 4 which aims to reduce child mortality by two thirds. "I feel a sense of urgency when it comes to MDG 4," she said, "[because] none of our children can be secure in a world where millions of children are at risk." Petra

Are you sure about the date? The date underneath the thumbnail says 18.09.2006. That's Monday. Do you have access to the cutline information?
As for Monday's official events, I found the following picture at Deadline Photo Press:

Cooperation, mutual respect preconditions for peace, prosperity – King
New York, 19 Sept. (Petra)—His Majesty King Abdullah reafirmed that prosperity and peace can not be achieved through isolation or by force. Two preconditions should be there, world cooperation and mutual respect, he said.
The King’s remarks came during His Majesty’s inauguration, Tuesday, of the Arab American Action Forum, which includes two hundred Arab and American young leaders, where he commented on the Arab youth’s feeling of despair that the American administration does not listen to them.
The forum was attended by Bahraini Crown Prince Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad and American ex-president Bill Clinton and president of World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab. Petra
