IFC Hosts Queen Rania of Jordan at Forum on Microfinance in the Middle East

May 31 2005

Press Release - International Finance Corporation

The International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank, today hosted Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan at a forum on microfinance in the Middle East. The purpose of the forum, which took place at IFC’s headquarters in Washington, was to discuss the particular challenges of developing microfinance in the region. Her Majesty underlined the role of microfinance, which not only helps small businesses grow strong roots, but nourishes capable, resourceful people starving for opportunity, cultivating their confidence and reaping a harvest of hope.

Other speakers included Elizabeth Littlefield, chief executive officer of the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP); Rupert Scofield, executive director of FINCA; Fouad Abdelmoumni, executive director of Association Al Amana; Peter Kooi, director of Microfinance of UNCDF; and Aftab Ahmed, senior manager of microfinance at IFC.

“We are very pleased to be able to host Her Majesty at IFC and to have such a strong panel of speakers on this important topic,” said Assaad Jabre, acting executive vice president of IFC. “Microfinance is a powerful force for helping large numbers of the region’s poorest families, as they invest in businesses, generate their own jobs, and reduce their vulnerability. In this year of microcredit, it is important to recognize that the poor need a range of financial services, not just loans. Depending on their circumstances, poor people need savings, cash transfers, and insurance, too.”

An Emissary for the 2005 United Nations Year of Microcredit, Queen Rania has championed initiatives to improve the livelihood of Jordanians from various sectors of society. One of her special interests is the development of income-generating projects and advancements in microfinance. She established the Jordan River Foundation, a nongovernmental organization that works at the grassroots level to motivate low-income Jordanian families to participate in economic initiatives.

IFC made its first microfinance investment in 1995 and has since helped build delivery capacity for microfinance in more than 35 countries around the world. IFC-supported microfinance institutions today serve more than 2 million low-income clients around the world.

IFC has also contributed to the creation of the financial infrastructure that is needed to expand the flow of private sector resources to the microfinance sector in its developing member countries.

In the Middle East, IFC has been investing in the microfinance sector since 1997. In addition to investment, IFC is providing substantial technical assistance through its Private Enterprise Partnership in the Middle East and North Africa. These efforts are helping develop a vibrant sector for the financing of micro and small businesses across the region.

You're welcome Humera.
I watched CNN today for a little bit, but they did't mention her at all. I hope Larry King will invite her soon. and her hair I think looks much darker and kind off bigger. and I agree Reina, her body looks just fine and much better.

I love this outfit. So chic.
I noticed that Rania hasnt been wearing anything that's too figure-hugging. If she's planning on losing more weight than atleast its a good thing that she's doing it gradually.

The photos are stunning! Who is the lady in the dark blue suit? She looks familiar.

I haven't felt the same way about Sesame Street since they announced a month ago they were going to put the "Cookie Monster" on a diet and take away his theme song, "C is For Cookie," replacing it with "A Cookie is a 'Sometimes Food.'" They are going to ask celebrities--perhaps some of those featured will appear--to make appearances and talk to the Cookie Monster about the "texture and fibre of foods" as well as "how to exercise appropriately....." Slightly off topic but it really irritated me!

Otherwise, the photos are great. Thank you for posting. And, I agree, QR looks healthy and glowing. It's nice she's not rushing to get super skinny again. She's much more beautiful this way.

little prince Hashem was so cute, such a quiet baby he is.thank you salma for the link.

Rania looks stunning in those pictures. I don't know if she has had any "work" done but she does look considerably different in her face and neck area.

Wow I've never really heard Queen Rania spoke. Now I can see what the buzz is all about, she's just soo normal like us and down to earth. I also thought that Prince Hashem was cute.

Thanks; I did a double-take the first time I looked at the photo as I thought it looked a bit like QN!

Now that you reached this conclusion, what made you think before she was (is)not as normal as us?

I think its adorable how Rania calls little Hashim "my baby" like in the Hello interview.
I know moms dont have favourites but she seems smitten with him.
Its funny, I was thinking yesterday about how Rania said she couldnt go to Prince Charles' wedding because she didnt want to be away from her newborn baby. I knew she must've brought Hashim along with her to the US. And I was right.
Hashim really does look like King Abdullah.

Yeah the youngest ones can have such a positive affect on the mom and the whole family. And they are also the most spoilt. It can be wonderful being the baby, but it does come with its trials (like from jealous older siblings:cool: ).

Well I have to say QR was absolutely great. I definitely didn't see any airs abiut her . SHe is perfectly natural and absolutely intelligent. SHe seems to know what is going on with current events and she is a greta spokesperson. KA must be proud! ANd yes the baby HAshim is so adorable and QR loves him, which is most important. But I hope his siblings don't get jealous or want for that attention.
:)
