Thai People Celebrate Queen’s 77th Birthday

The world’s longest serving consort of a monarch, HM Queen Sirikit of Thailand, celebrates her 77th birthday today. Several festivels will today will mark the Queen’s Birthday throughout Phuket. A mothers and daughters fashion show entitled ‘My mom is beautiful’, candle-lighting ceremony later this evening and Phuket Rajabhat University will host a variety of activities. August 12 is also marked as Mother’s Day in Thailand.

Emphasised in the article was the impact of the credit crunch, real estate values plumeting and stock market difficulties with Forbes stating all in all the global recession has led to the royals listed loosing a total of $22 billion, 17% of the total wealth listed last year. Thai King checks into hospital for check-ups

Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej has checked into Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital for a few check-up which is scheduled to start today Thursday, said a hospital official. State visit to Thailand from Malaysia

Starting March 9th to the 12th, Malaysian King Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin will start a state visit to Thailand the spokesman of the Thai Foreign Ministry said Friday. Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya assured the Malaysians that Thailand has been fully prepared to receive the King of Malaysia during the state visit, a spokesman of the Thai Foreign Ministry said.

Australian Journalist Pardoned in Thailand

The Australian journalist Harry Nicolaides, who was imprisoned last August and convicted last month under the strict lèse majesté laws in Thailand, has been pardoned by King Bhumibol according to his family. Pardon Likely for Australian Journalist Imprisoned for Insulting Thai Monarchy

Australian novelist Harry Nicolaides has been recommended for a royal pardon after being convicted in January under Thailand’s notorious lèse majesté laws. Nicolaides was sentenced to three years in prison on 19 January for allegedly insulting the Thai monarchy in a 2005 self-published novel, Verisimilitude, in which a fictional crown prince was mentioned.
