Dutch King and Queen Begin Regional Visit to the Wadden Islands

Today, Tuesday May 9, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima started a two-day visit to the Wadden Islands, in the provinces of North Holland and Fryslân.
The first stop was in the municipality and island of Texel where the Royal Couple paid a visit to the Museum Kaap Skil, a maritime museum.
Accompanied by Corina Hordijk, artistic director of the museum, the King and the Queen toured the museum and toured the exhibition “Palm Wood Wreck” which shows the finds from a shipwreak.
Then they attended a meeting focused on “the importance of the shipwrecks that lie on the seabed for the art of Texel and the need to protect these time capsules full of historical information and objects”.
Afterwards the Royal Couple paid a visit to the sheep farm De Waddel where they were informed about “about future-proof and climate-adaptive entrepreneurship and development”.
The visit in Texel ended at the Beach Pavilion Paal 9, where they met with assistant beach helpers. The Royal Couple also met with members of Texel Plastic Vrij, a non-profit organization that aims to make Texel plastic free “by organizing clean-up campaigns, providing information and investing in recycling and green projects”.
In early afternoon the King and the Queen moved to the municipality and island of Vlieland.
The first visit was at De Jutter, an education center for youth development. The Royal Couple met with parents and teachers to be informed about the education on an island.
The following visit was at the care villa De Ton in the residential area of “Boswijk”. This care villa provides a nursing home, a hairdresser, a dentist, space for daytime activities, neighborhood activities.
Then the King and the Queen paid a visit to the Tromp’s Huys Museum which houses a collection about Vlieland’s maritime past.
The last stop of the first day in the Wadden Islands was in the municipality and island of Terschelling. Then the Royal Couple met with members of the Royal Dutch Rescue Company (KNRM) to talk about the rescue operations.
In the evening the King and the Queen attended a performance at the Tryater multilingual theater company.
