State Visit from Italy to the Netherlands Begins
At the invitation of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and his daughter Laura Mattarella, started today, wednesday November 9, a three-day state visit to the Netherlands.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima officially received the President and his daughter with a welcoming ceremony held at Dam Square in Amsterdam. The King and the President inspected a guard of honor and the national anthems were played.
Afterwards, in the Royal Palace, took place a private meeting between the King and the President.
In the evening, the King and the Queen hosted a State Banquet at the Royal Palace for the President and his daughter. Princess Beatrix and Princess Margriet were among the guests.
The King started his speech by expressing his “pleasure and privilege to receive you and your daughter at the Royal Palace in our capital”, adding that Italy and the Netherlands are “dear allies” that “stand by each other in difficult times” and “believe in the same values of freedom, equality and justice”. The King als praised the President for being “an ardent advocate of youth”.
