Dutch King and Queen Begin State Visit to Austria

At the invitation of Federal President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima started today, Monday June 27, a three-day state visit to Austria.
Upon the arrival in Vienna, the Royal Couple was officially welcomed by the President of the Republic of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen and the First Lady, Doris Schmidauer, in the courtyard of the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the president’s official residence.
The King and the President inspected the guard of honour and the national anthems were played.
Inside the Palace took place a meeting followed by a lunch hosted by the Presidential Couple.
In the afternoon the Royal Couple and the Presidential Couple laid a wreath at the Shoah Wall of Names Memorial. Then the King and the Queen were received by the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, at the City Hall where took place a meeting followed by the signing the city’s golden book. Afterwards King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima paid a visit to the Austrian Parliament where they were received by Doris Bures, Deputy Speaker of the Austrian Parliament, who accompanied them for a tour of the building which is under renovation.
The first day in Austria ended with a state banquet hosted by the Presidential Couple and held at Belvedere Palace, a museum where next year, from February to May 2023, will be opened the exhibition “Klimt. Inspired by Rodin, Van Gogh, Matisse…” organized with the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam.
The King, in his speech, thanked the President for the warm welcome and also “for your unwavering commitment to stability, peace and tolerance in Europe”. King Willem-Alexander added that both country share interests in “the need to green our economies” but also “the living climate and social cohesion in neighborhoods and cities”.
