A wreath laying ceremony took place and the King decorated Corporal Albert Kunyuku, who has just celebrated his 100th birthday and is a veteran of World War II.
Then the Royal Couple, accompanied by the Presidential Couple, paid a visit to the Musée National de Kinshasa where, during a ceremony, the King formally handed over a rare kakuungu mask of the Suku ethnic group that was lent, for a long period, by the Museum of Africa of Tervuren.
At noon the King and the Queen were officially welcomed at the Esplanade of the “Palais du Peuple”, the Presidential palace. After the welcoming ceremony the Royal Couple had separate meetings with the President and the First Lady.
In the afternoon King Philippe and Queen Mathilde paid a visit to Silikin Village, a hub of entrepreneurship and innovation that, with the help of Enabel, the Belgian development agency, “allows young people to be supervised, trained and professionally integrated, at least 50% of whom are women”.
The first day ended with an official banquet at the Cite de l’Union Africaine hosted by the Presidential Couple.
