Crown Princess Mary Turns 50

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary celebrates her 50th birthday today. She was born Mary Elizabeth Donaldson on February 5, 1972, in Hobart, Tasmania. Daughter of the Scottish-born Professor of Applied Mathematics John Donaldson and University secretary Henrietta Clark Donaldson (died in 1997), the Crown Princess has two sisters, Jane Alison Stephens and Patricia Anne Bailey, and a brother, John Stuart.
Mary started her schooling in Houston, Texas, where his father was working, in 1974-1975. Back in Hobart she completed the primary education, from 1978 to 1982 she attended Waimea Heights Primary School, from 1983 to 1986 she studied at the Taroona High School abd for the the next two years she studied at Hobart Matriculation College. Then Mary studied at the University of Tasmania from 1989 to 1994 when she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Law. Between 1994-1996 Mary “qualified for a Certificate of Advertising from the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA) and subsequently for a Certificate of Marketing from the Australian Direct Marketing Association”. Later Mary moved to Melbourn where she worked for the worldwide advertising company DDB Needham and then was employed as customer manager at MOJO Partners. Back in Sydney in 1999, Mary worked as the managing director of the international advertising agency Young and Rubicam.
On September 2000, during Summer Olympics in Sydney, Mary met Crown Prince Frederik in a pub. The Crown Prince was in Australia as a member of Denmark’s delegation to the Olympics.
On October 8, 2003, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik announced the engagement of Crown Prince Frederik to Mary Elizabeth Donaldson. Mary and Frederik married on May 14, 2004 in Our Lady’s Church, the Copenhagen Cathedral.
Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have four children: Prince born on October 15, 2005, Princess Isabella, born on April 21, 2007, Prince Vincent, born on January 8, 2011, and Princess Josephine, born on January 8, 2011.
Crown Princess Mary holds several patronages focused on the humanitarian aid, fashion industry, support for research and science, social and health patronages, culture, and sport.
In 2007 Crown Princess Mary established “The Mary Foundation – HRH Crown Princess Mary’s Foundation”, a foundation that aims “of combating social isolation and works in three areas: Bullying and Well-being, Domestic Violence and Loneliness”.
To mark this special occasion, the Danish Royal Court released new official gala portraits of the Crown Prince Couple and new official photos of the Crown Prince’s family.
In the past few days the Crown Princess opened two exhibitions organized on the occasion of her 50th birthday: “Mary & the Crown Princesses” and “HRH Crown Princess Mary 1972 – 2022” and, on February 3rd, the Crown Princess unveiled a new portrait made by Spanish-born artist Jesús Herrera Martínez.
