The Duchess of Cambridge Turns 40
Today, Sunday January 9, the Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 40th birthday. She was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, on 9 January 1982. Catherine, eldest daughter of Michael and Carole Middleton, has two younger siblings: Philippa (Pippa) and James.
In 1984, Catherine moved with her family to Amman in Jordan, where her father worked for two and a half years. Back in West Berkshire in 1986, Catherine started her studies at St. Andrew’s School in Pangbourne until July 1995. Then, at the Marlborough College in Wiltshire, Catherine studied Chemistry, Biology and Art at A-level.
After a gap year in 2000, spent studying in Florence in Italy and Chile, Catherine enrolled at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2001. In 2005 Catherine graduated with a 2:1 in History of Art.
During the university years Catherine met with Prince William who was studying Geography.
After years of speculations about their relationship, on November 16, 2010 Clarence House announced Catherine and William’s engagement.
On April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey Prince William married Catherine Elizabeth Middleton and they became The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The Duchess has three children with the Duke: George Alexander Louis, born on 22 July 2013; Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, born on 2 May 2015 and Prince Louis Arthur Charles, born on 23 April 2018.
The Duchess is involved in several patronages focused on sports, addiction, art, history, young people, child care and mental health.
To mark this special occasion, Kensington Palace released three new portraits of the Duchess, taken by photographer Paolo Roversi in November 2021 at Kew Gardens.
The free portraits will be displayed in the permanent Collection at the National Portrait Gallery, of which the Duchess is patron.
