It was announced on January 18 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer retain their HRH status or perform engagements on behalf of the royal family.

This comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced on January 8 that they would be stepping back from royal life and were to move abroad to Canada.

This time, the couple have stated they aim to repay the £2.4m to the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their British base. This arrangement comes into effect this spring, and discussions about the couple’s security and financial costs are currently taking place in Canada, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggesting that the Canadian government should cover them.

The Queen released a statement today, in which she said “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family,” the statement continued.

“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life”, followed by “I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family”.
