Dutch Regional Visit to Southwest Drenthe

Today, Wednesday September 18, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima paid a regional visit to Southwest Drenthe.
The first stop was in the municipality of Hoogeveen where the Royal Couple was welcomed by Mrs. Jetta Klijnsma, King’s Commissioner in the province of Drenthe. At the Grandcafé Marron in Hoogeveen the King and the Queen met with founders and participants of the organizations “De Smederijen” and “Jong Hoogeveen”. De Smederijen aims to help the residents of the municipality to make plans to improve the quality of life in their own neighborhood; Jong Hoogeveen “help children and young people grow up in a healthy, safe, debt-free and well-educated way, so that they can successfully find their way in society and on the labor market”.
Then the Royal Couple visited GKN Fokker, a leading global aerospace supplier of technologically advanced aircraft systems and components. They toured the facility.
Afterwards the King and the Queen moved to the municipality of Westerveld where they visited the Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe. The Royal Couple were informed by the volunteers about nature conservation and the conservation of biodiversity in the area.
At noon they visited the ASTRON, the Dutch Institute for Radio Astronomy where is located a large radio telescope that is maintained by volunteers.
Then the King and the Queen went to the municipality of De Wolden where they mey with the residents of the village of Veeningen and they were informed about “De Wolden rich in initiative”, a subsidy program supported by the city council that help the municipality to tie with initiatives from society itself. The Royal Couple also met with members of the “Groene Hart” initiative that involves the residents in the mainteinance of the village.
The King and the Queen ended the regional visit in the municipality of Meppel. In the community center the Royal Couple met with a couple who have lived in Haveltermade for over 50 years and talked about the transformation of the neighborhood. They also were informed about the various activities of the neighborhood.
Then the King and the Queen walked through the city center and greeted the people gathered to met them. The last event was a visit at the the Grote Kerk.
