On Sunday evening at the Aarhus Town Hall, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark officially ‘opened’ the municipality of Aarhus as the 2018 European Volunteer Capital.

Joined by the Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard, the Crown Princess delivered a speech during the event, praising the social benefits of volunteering: “Volunteers get a network and friendships, and they experience the joy and satisfaction of making a difference.”

The European Volunteer Capital is decided each year by the European Volunteer Centre. It is given to celebrate a municipality that is “particularly noted in terms of volunteering”; for Aarhus, this included the municipality’s “integration taking place between the municipality, culture and social welfare areas”.
