Romania’s Last King, Mihai I, Passes Away Aged 96

  December 5, 2017 at 8:26 am by

The Romanian Royal Family has announced a short time ago the death of former King Mihai I. He was 96.

King Mihai passed away today at his home in Aubonne, Switzerland, at 1pm Romanian local time. His youngest daughter, Princess Maria, was at his bedside.

The former King – one of only three living World War II heads of state – had been in ill health for some time. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2016, which severely compromised his health since.

The Royal Family’s statement said that full funeral details will be released tomorrow, but that the King’s body will lie in state at Peleș Castle and then at the Royal Palace of Bucharest. The funeral service will be held at Bucharest’s Romanian Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral, and the King will be buried at the Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș.

Crown Princess Margareta, eldest daughter of King Mihai and his late wife, Queen Anne, will made a public statement at 7pm this evening, Romanian local time.

I simply cannot accept speaking about our beloved King Michael I-st in the past tense. No matter His old age, His Majesty has always been – and will continue to be – a pillar of moral fortitude for us, an example of complete love and devotion to His country and people. In spite of his lately weakening state of His health, one is never prepared enough for such a tragic event.

May the Good Lord env envelope our King’s eternal rest with His divine grace !

On this tragic event, I would like to convey to all the Members of Our Royal Family, especially to the Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Her Royal Highness Princess Margarfegt of Romania, our future Queen, my son’s and my own most sincere condolences. We will always be loyally by our Royal Family side.
