Five Facts about His Majesty
– Born on the anniversary of his great-grandfather’s death, he was named Albert in his honour (and as a way to ‘lessen the blow’ on the bereaved Queen Victoria)
– He was the first reigning British monarch to visit the United States
– He was trained in the Royal Navy, and during World War One saw action in the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS Collingwood
– He proposed to his future wife, Elizabeth, three times before she accepted his marriage proposal
– His actions during World War Two immensely improved his and the monarchy’s popularity, which had been driven down by the 1936 abdication of his brother Edward VIII
