175 Years On: Queen Elizabeth Follows Another Queen’s Train Journey Footsteps

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have today retraced the steps of their mutual ancestor, Queen Victoria, who on this day in 1842 became the first British monarch to travel by train.

Arriving at Slough Railway Station, the royal duo were taken to the station’s original waiting room where they were shown a timeline of the Great Western Railway’s history, and saw exhibitions of artwork made by local schoolchildren.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip then boarded the 12:01pm Intercity Express Train to London’s Paddington Station, the same route Queen Victoria took (and described as “delightful”). Joining the royal pair aboard the train were descendants of the original train’s designer and driver.

Once at Paddington, the Queen officially named the train’s engine – which is one of a new series introduced later this year by the GWR – after herself.
