Prince William In GQ: Mental Health, His Children, And Diana
The Duke of Cambridge has given an exclusive interview to British GQ magazine for their July edition.
In the interview with Alastair Campbell, Prince William’s main focus promotion of the mental health campaign Heads Together he started with his wife, Catherine, and brother Harry last year.
“I’ve been really shocked how many people live in fear and in silence because of their mental illness…I cannot understand how families, even behind closed doors, still find it so hard to talk about it. I am shocked we are so worried about saying anything about the true feelings we have,” William said about the stigma surrounding mental health issues, while reiterating that the Heads Together aim was “smashing the taboo” around the issue.

Other excerpts from the interview see the Duke discuss his children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, as well as the upcoming twentieth anniversary of his mother’s death.
“I want to bring up my children in a happy, stable, secure world and that is so important to both of us as parents. I want George to grow up in a real, living environment, I don’t want him growing up behind palace walls, he has to be out there,” he said of the importance he places on family and what he aims to provide his children.
He also spoke of how he was sad that George, 3, and Charlotte, 2, “will never know” their paternal grandmother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in August 1997.
“I am in a better place about it than I have been for a long time, where I can talk about her more openly, talk about her more honestly, and I can remember her better, and publicly talk about her better…I still find it difficult now because at the time it was so raw. And also it is not like most people’s grief, because everyone else knows about it, everyone knows the story, everyone knows her,” he said of Diana’s unexpected death and the enormous public reaction in the week after.
The full interview can be read in the magazine, which goes on sale on Thursday June 1.
